For everyone that is interested in an aftermarket AVIC D1 head unit installation in a C5 I recommend it highly. If it is done correctly it makes the interior look not as ‘kludgey’ (if this is a word). I also added or swapped out the following:
Review Mirror – Gentex Mirror
Speakers – JL XR and ZR
Amplifier – JL 300/4 (Fitted under the passenger seat)
XM Radio – Antenna located behind the rear facia
Backup Camera
Dynamat
I had all the work done at Audio One in Richmond Virginia, on Midlothian TPKE. They have very considerate installer. Everything that was removed from the car was placed in an ordered fashion on a carpet; he masked off the door sills and went out of his way to protect the car. When he was done the car went back together, and there was no hint that they worked on the car, overall not bad of an experience.
I have taken a few and was not happy with the results. It looks like a mirror except it has a compass, temp, and garge door opener built into it. The thing that I like most is the lighting. They call it mood lighting, which is just a soft light that illuminates the console area at night. Anyway I wiil try again to tak some photo's.
Great looking install! What did they charge for the installation?
Just to install the head unit takes about a day todo, so figuire on $400.00. I pretty much told them what to do, and really wasn't that hard, so I would not be scared to do it myself.

0kay, so this thing has Homelink built into it? Good. Now, is your car a '01 or newer with electrochromatic mirrors? Does this replace it as a straight swap? Is it auto-dimming? Use the same connector, etc?

Please tell me more!
My car is an '04 with the electrochomatic mirrors. It's almost a straight swap, you do have change the mount and it is auto dimming. As for the connector I will have to check. It must have been easy, because it was done in less than an hour.

This is potentially outstanding news, because I'd very much like to retain the auto-dimming in both my driver door and interior rear view, but I've really wanted to add Homelink and this would be the best way to go, I think. The compass would be a bonus. Please let me know where I can get one of these mirrors and how difficult the plug 'n play is. I don't mind having to install a new mount.
