They are not bad speakers .. Focal makes very good stuff. Their Polyglass line is their 2nd level speaker line (edit: access is the entry level line) and quality wise is very good .. and not cheap by any means. The Polyglass uses a 12db crossover with 0/-2/-4db attenuation for the tweeters which is a nice feature. However I do not find them as musical or as accurate as the Polykevlar line. They will not play down into the sub bass range very well without very well deadened doors and some very clean watts .. much below about 90hz and they will struggle from what I know.
They would work great in a vette and would most likely satisfy 90% of all listeners with a sound quality most 2 way systems can't touch. The ability to seperate frequencies between multiple drivers, although difficult to set up properly, is HUGELY beneficial and something I did not respect until doing my own 3 way system. The volume and clarity you can get from a 3 way system just surpases that of a 2 way setup in all regards IMO.
Not a bad buy at all IMO ... to give you an idea I have a 7" Focal Polykevlar midbass and a tn51 tweet in my car that I paid $400 shipped for with a Focal Polyglass 3 way crossover (2) included in that price. If I had it all to do over again I would spend the extra $40 on the tn52 tweet as it is a bit better off axis.
Oh well got off on a tangent .. I love the Focal stuff and when I replace my current home units I will be building a Focal set up for the house as well BTW I ordered through Zalytron.com .. talk to elliot very knowledgeable.
Thanks fej I will call Elliott and see if we can piece together what I am looking for. I have the Focal 165K3P's in my coupe and love them... This will be going in the wife's vert...
He will likely mention the same polykevlar 7" 7211 ( I think that is what the number is, dual 8 ohm voice coils) that I am running and you could probably get away with doing just a 2 way system with those. I messed around with running just the 7"/tweet but at the volumes I like the 3 way was just more clear and accurate. The 7" is a REALLY impressive midbass and plays comfortably down to the 63hz I have it at and does it well. Running it only 2 way and up to around 3.5 to 4k you would likely have to cross it over at a higher octave (at least 80 maybe as high as 100 hz) .. the more I asked of it in terms of the frequency range the more low bass accuracy I lost.
I have a DLS 3" Iridium mid (dome type). Have it playing from 400hz to 3.5k. Very clear and accurate. If I had it to do all over again I think I would try and stick to a true 3" mid for mounting reasons as the DLS mids take almost a 4" hole to mount (sealed back mid). Problem is that a portion of the mid is covered behind the factory door panel Elliot may have an idea for a 4" mid for you but you WILL run in to the same problem I had (door panel blocking part of your mid)
Someday I may motivate and make some custom baffles to try and get the mounting positions improved behind the stock grill but at the moment I am enjoying the sound too much to care about it
I also picked up the Focal Polyglass 3 way crossover from Elliot to handle the LP filter for the mid and the HP filtering for the tweet (3.5k each at 12db). The crossover is also set up to handle the mid HP point at 300hz at 12db but that was too low for my application so my HU is handling the rest.
I used vrumvrum's mounts and he has the specs for my cutouts now ( I went a tiny bit big for the cutouts for some moveability). If I had it to do all over again and wanted to keep things simple I would get a true 3" mid if possible (IE smaller cutout the DLS was a 4" cutout) so that you would not need to build a custom baffle/mount for it to fit. At some point I might motivate and build my own baffle for some better speaker positioning but at this point I am happy to be listening and driving my baby
