I have tried playing DVDs and it works fine, it does have a break switch, witch I had to ground out to get it to play. Im not finished with the install so I have not driven the car. There is also a speed signal input that needs to be hooked up and Im sure the GPS can tell if the car is moving.

My installer got my D1 DVD to play while moving but won't say how

Yes on my D1 the DVD would stop playing at 10 MPH until my installer hacked into it and now it plays while on the roll.

Close, but not exactly what you asked. I just put one of these units in my C6. Here is a link to the thread where I posted some pictures and comments on parts.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1365347

To add detail to one of the questions:
The Z1 will play DVD's on the HU. It will not play them while moving even if the E-brake wire is grounded. In fact it gives you an error stating it thinks the e-brake wire is hooked up wrong. It uses the Nav system to determine if you are moving. Hack won't be as easy as the previous units. Some NAV features are unavailable while moving too.
While moving the DVD continues to play to the external monitor and the sound continues while a warning message displays on the HU.

Pulp_Fiction,

What addons did you get? ipod, sat. radio, bluetooth? Would like info on how these interfaces work. Did you leave the bose system in? If so, how does it sound? Do your chimes still work?

Sat radio with navtraffic. Hooking that up today weather permitting.

No need for IPOD. This unit has the 30 gig hdd built in with 10 gig for just music.

I will order the bluetooth later, it was out of stock when I first ordered it.

I didn't have Bose, just the base system. I knew ahead of time I was going to get this unit so I only have the 2LT package.

Sound is pretty good. The sound fields in this unit are nice.

Chimes work because I used a harness adapter with it's own chime to interface with the data bus. The chimes do not come out of the speakers any more.

Illumination is a challenge I have not yet overcome but it is not too important as it only dims the unit a bit at night anyway.

When I pull it back apart to finish the sat nav I'm going to see what I can figure out about the amp thump I'm experiencing at shut off. Some have the problem some don't.

Well as far as the video goes while driving, you can set up two switches. One switch to ground and back to the ebrake wire, and the other switch to 12v and then to the reverse wire. Take your rca video output wire and hook it up to your rear camera in. All you have to do from this point on insert the Dvd, select rear camera, toggle the ebrake switch, then just flick the 12v switch for the rear camera and you should have a full screen playing dvds while you drive. I've done this on tons of Avic-d1's, N2's and, N3's. Any other question just PM me. Hope that helps.

Hey to all who own the avic-z1, for navigation purposes, how would you rate the z1? Like if I want to take it to a huge city without maps is it that reliable? I plan on driving it to atlanta, driving for the first time, is it that reliable to do that? How accurate is it? Also, a good forum for avic z1 or avic chat is here at www.avic411.com

The D1 had what was IMO a very good nav system, and so far, the Z1 seems slightly superior....definitely no need to take any maps with you...but as with any nav system, it doesn't always know the most efficient route...so having a map for backup wouldn't hurt.

There is a Hack for the unit, not sure if anyone knows yet but here it is:

1. Make sure e-brake wire is grounded
2. Flash the headlights once while the Z1 is loading
3. Agree to all the little warning screens
4. Enjoy!

To add some details: This hack only works if your illumination wire is hooked up correctly and you don't have a daytime running lights to interfere. My problem was with hooking up the illumination. The unit wants 12v and our lighting system in the dash seems to work off of modulating the ground. A relay would fix but too much hassle to just dim the unit a bit. I'm sure there are wires somewhere that provide the 12v as the unit wants it I just haven't found them yet..

I will be testing this hack soon and adding a PAC Tr7 to simulate the light flash it if works. The TR7 should also fix the Amp thump I experience with the stock amp.

There is also a Pac module I think its a TR7 or something like that, you can get them on ebay for like 19 bucks and it can simulate a pulse automatically, that way you would not have to flash your lights.

That new Z1 looks pretty sweet. I just installed a Pioneer N3 today on a customers ford F250. It came out great and the nav is so accurate. For the new N3 there is a very easy way to get it to play video. All you have to do is ground out the parking brake wire and on the bottom of the N3 there is a sticker with void written all over it. If you peel it off there is a toggle switch and all you do is flip it and then it plays video

I just got the AVIC-Z1 installed in my Avalanche and I am very, very disappointed in the navigation software. I am coming from a Garmin 2610 and there is no comparison. The Z1 looks prettier and is in-dash but that is about it. Here is an example:

When programming the route to work with Garmin, it automatically selected one of the two backroad routes that I have learned to use over time. 22.1 Miles and 35 minutes is the estimate and it is usually spot on.

With the Z1 the route it chooses if I tell it to avoid the interstates is 35 miles (12 of it heading in the wrong direction) with an hour and five minute time estimate. If I allow it to select the interstates, it still takes me 5 miles in the wrong direction to get to an interstate for a 27 mile trip estimated to take 48 minutes (would really take well over an hour with traffic). Today I used the Z1 to navigate to the house from work. I ignored its directions just to see when it picked up the right route. I was literally 4.7 miles from the house when it was still asking me to turn around and backtrack 8 miles so I could travel 11 more miles for a total trip of 19.8 miles, WHEN I WAS ONLY 4.7 MILES FROM HOME AND HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. As soon as I turned off that street to the street that was two turns from home, it recalculated and picked the 4.7 mile route.

On top of that, the e-brake crap is BS. The Engineers at Pioneer (and I imagine the other safety freaks at Kenwood, etc.) should be shot for requiring the e-brake for so much stuff. I can understand it for DVD playing, but you cannot search for an address, point of interest, change route options, etc. without stopping on the side of the road and setting the e-brake. Lame as can be. I spent almost $3,000 to get this unit installed with and IPOD interface and Sat radio (which has crappy quality too) and I am calling the dealer tomorrow to let them know I am coming back in and they are taking it out of the truck. I would rather have my Garmin any day of the week and twice on Sunday's. Take my word for it, if you want and in-dash screen for DVDs and a Navigation device, I would reccomend a $700 Clarion or JVC in-dash DVD player and a Garmin or Magellin Nav until over this device.

Just my opinion, but Pioneer really screwed up with this one.
