Anyone hear about the AVIC-Z1? It's a double din model with a built in 30 GIG HD, and the latest technology navigation system. I'm thinking about putting one into my C5 vert. I have an AVIC-N1 now and don't like it because it blocks my air vents and I also want a more built in look.
I have a deposit down on one at La Jolla Audio here in San Diego. They claim they have prefab bezel for it. Should be in next week. I'll post pics when its done.

I did the bezel myself. When started this I bought a new bezel so I could still drive my car. Once I was done with the first bezel I converted the second bezel to a double din also. If anyone is interested I will sell it. As soon as I’m done with the Z1 install I will post pictures.
I’m disappointed with the ipod interface. It looks good but it’s a little slow but the biggest problem is that once you start playing the song you want you can only use the forward and reveres buttons to scroll through the list or album you have selected. So basically once the song starts playing it works like a regular cd player. You can’t see a list of songs, all you see is the title and info about the song you are currently playing and that it is song 2 of 12 for example. Press forward to get to the third song but you cant see a list of all the songs in that album or play list. There is no way to go back, so if you want to play a song from a different album by the same artist you have to start the search process from the beginning. The problem with that is that the Z1 displays five artists at one time in alphabetical order on the screen, press the down arrow and it goes to the next five. It take 1 and a half to 2 seconds to scroll to the next five, If you have 420 artists on your ipod like I do you have to hit the down button 42 times to get to a artist in the middle of the alphabet. This is usable but not nearly as efficient as the controls on the ipod. The music library stored on the internal hard drive is very cool. Its interface is perfect and that’s the way the ipod interface should be set up. The Z1 is in my car now but not wired. I couldn’t wait to see how this thing worked so I pulled the battery out of my car and wired it up on my kitchen table soon as the ups guy delivered it. I will post pictures of all the screens when I’m done with the install.
I called pioneer to complain about the back button problem. I didn’t have to explain it to the customer service guy, he said he has had about 10 people call about it already. Unfortunately that’s the way it is and nothing is in the works to fix it.

You make some good points, but since I just upgraded from an AVIC-D1 with the clunky 1st gen iPod interface, this one is a hundred times better.
This is my first pioneer but I have seen the D1 interface and I agree this is a huge improvement. Overall this is a great unit. I have a stock navigation unit in my 2004 GMC Denali and there is no comparison between the two.
I have the D1 and had to have the DVD unit installed to play DVDs. Does the Z1 have the DVD player built in like the N1 unit or you have to add the DVD player to it?
The Z1 plays DVDs on the HU when you are not moving and has an output for external monitor.
Can you confirm it plays DVD's on the HU. The literature says it only outputs DVD to the external monitor. If it plays while your not moving it must use the emerg. brake switch. This sounds hackable.
