OK so I haven't started a car without first plugging in my V1 for ten years ...actually they're all hard wired now. So now I see Laser jammers have graduated to the level that Cincinatti Microwave (Escort) is offering one ...which to me lends credibility ....and something called the "Blinder" seems to be even better.

Has anyone had any experience with any Laser Jammers? From what I've seen they run around $500 installed which I will gladly pay if they work, I don't expect perfection, but something that got 3 out of 4 successful interventions would really get my attention. What can you tell me guys?

 

They are illegal is some states, CA for instance. Check out some of the radar test websites for their evals on the effectiveness of laser jammers. The products seem to work, but you sure don't get much warning time. Most of the highway patrol guys are using K or Ka bands.

 

I've been using the ZR-3 Shifter for a while. I had it on my 350Z and now it is on my Corvette. It works. My neighbor is a cop. We ran some tests. With the Shifter off, he can get a reading just about as soon as the car comes into sight, more than 1000 feet away. With the Shfiter on, he can't get a reading until I'm less than 100 feet away.

The cops in the Atlanta metro area are heavily into laser. I get tagged 4 or 5 times a week. Now in a car without the Shifters, the laser detector in the 8500 will give a short blip to tell you you've been tagged. It only takes 50 milliseconds to get a valid speed reading with the laser units the local cops are using, so they don't have to hold the laser on you very long. But with the Shifter running, they typically hold on me for 10-15 seconds trying to get a reading. Those seconds could allow you to really reel in the speed if you are going fast.

Now I usually don't break the speed limit by much, so there are only a few times when I'm really worried about getting a ticket. But it is reassuring to hear that long laser tag as I trundle by a cop. That's telling me the system is still working.

 

I did the same test with a buddy here. Normally I could lock a speed on cars anywhere from 500-1300 feet(the laser gun reads feet with the speed). I couldn't get a reading on his car until he was about 50 feet or less away. Now I know, anyone I can't get a reading on is running a jammer, which in CA is a separate infraction, CVC 28150(a) Jamming devices for police radar or laser.

Is the infraction for jamming radar in CA more serious than a speeding infraction assuming the speed wasn't wreckless?

 

It's just the same as any other infraction as far as I know. I don't have a bail schedule(ticket price list) for it so I don't know how much it would cost.

Because when the V1 gives you a laser warning its too late you have been tagged. The only thing the arrows will tell you is where the cop that IS giving you a ticket came from

 

so,who makes the zr3 and where is it sold?although i never had an issue w/the v1.

The only issue with the V1 is that it detects laser only. Laser takes less than 1 second from off to get your speed, V1 will detect this and alert within ( I believe) .3 seconds this leaves you only at best .7 seconds to: notice, react, check speed, and slow down. It is pretty much commen knowledge that without a Laser jammer of some sort if you hear your detector alert for laser the oficer will have your speed before you can do anything about it. If your Laser detector goes off and you dont get a ticket you most probably were not going to get one wether you had a dector or not.

 

I've been running the ZR-3 laser shifter for a while now in combination with my Escort Passport 8500 X50 (I don't think its compatible with non Escort brands). I've run the same "tests" as described above with a friend of mine on the local police dept. The shifter definitly works as advertised, and has saved my butt on more than a few occasions.
However, any officer that routinely uses laser also knows that if his laser gun isn't locking on and giving a speed reading after more than a few seconds, then the driver must be using a shifter. If its a state, where shifters are illegal, then here comes a ticket. If they are legal, he can still pull you over based on visual speed determination.
So, the trick is to use the shifter as its intended... As soon as the system alerts you to laser, immediately SLOW DOWN AND then quickly TURN OFF the shifter (just push the button). That way, the officer gets a speed reading on his laser gun after only a few seconds, and hopefully that few seconds has given you time to slow down to the speed limit (or at least significantly slower than you were going before the laser alert went off).
No detector or laser shifter or any other device is going to make your car "stealth". But I love my X50 and ZR3 and can't recommend them enough.
One last point: While a few states (Virginia, California, and most recently Illinois) have outlawed LASER shifters... it is illegal in ALL STATES to use any type of RADAR jammer (plus, I've read that the ones on the "market" don't really work anyways).

I think I paid $499 plus $125 for installation (which also included hardwiring the ZR3 and my Escort Passport 8500 X50).

 

They go for a little less than $350 on eBay (self install)

 

I think if I dont find any concrete evidence that the K40 Defuser works Im ripping it out of my car.
