If a sub box is built to spec, will it sound better, worse or no different if I also put in a fair amount of fiber-fill? I know thats generally done when the box is smaller than spec calls for but what about when the box is right?
If it is built to the proper air space for the sub (IE recommended enclosure) you can alter the sound of the bass output a bit by adding polyfill to trick the sub into thinking it is in a bigger box that it is. Basically making it a bit more "boomy" while loosing a bit of the tightness of the bass reproduction. (would take a fair amount of poly to see a difference from my experience) Sometimes a bit of polyfill is used to keep the sound wave from the rear of the sub bouncing directly back into the cone and causing some cancellation/distortion.
Worth experimenting with a bit for sure. Worst case scenario you just pull the polyfill out if you do not like the sound change. You might just like the sound better
