Modifying I-Pod connector
I'm wanting to create my own docking station for my I-Pod. Can anyone tell me how to modify the IPod2Car male plug connector so that it no longer locks into place when inserted into the IPod? TIA
you would either have to remove or cut off the tabs on the sides. You should be able to split the housing of the connector and remove the metal tabs that are on each side of the connector. I see where you are going with this. Sounds like a neat idea. Then simply glue the connector cover back on, some snap in, or just leave it be if its not in plain site.
Actually i was just thinking and I think that the side metal tabs are part of the connector cover and you just simply remove the cover and you should be done with it
Or you can use the upright dock station connector. That has the male connector without the tabs

Well, not really. I have the male connector already and that's what I need to neuter, so to speak.
Here's exactly what I'm trying to do:
I currently have the cable coming up from the rearmost lower corner of the cupholder.
I want to set the connector in place, at a similar angle to what you see in the photo above (but not quite as radical), with some kind of putty, then pour some sort of a self-leveling/hardening substance into the cup holder to form the docking cradle. I'm up for suggestions on what might be best to use. Ideally, I would like to install a "dummy" I-Pod during the pour, so I could create a dock void with it, then remove the dummy piece after the resin, foam or whatever I wind up using sets up.

This is actually going to turn out to be pretty easy, I think. I've found a cheap source of Universal iPod docking adapters -- AMAZON!! 3 for $9. Here's another source.
Now, it's simply a matter of deciding what substance to use to set the universal adapter into while it sets up. I'll post pics when it's done. With any luck, that will be in less than a week from now.
why not go to a local arts and crafts store and get some blocks of styrofoam. carve the shape you want and the docking area for the iPod to sit in than when it's in the shape you want cover it with fiberglass resin. You can than paint it to match the interior to finish it off.
EDIT: you must have posted as I was typing.
With those universal docking units you can do the above as a "holder" and carve out the area in it to hold this universal piece to actually sit the iPod into.

I agree. It would be the perfect solution with the female input socket, desired angle etc... However, the shape is the problem. I want my docking station to fit into the C5 cup holder. I don't think I have the tools or skills to carve that Apple adapter into the required shape, unfortunately. I do wonder if it could be dismantled, however...
guess what. Ive got one at home and i can see if i can take it apart. well actually i have a couple here at work too. I'll see what i can do to take it apart and maybe snap a few pics of it apart to see what you can do with one.
Here are the dimensions of it whole: a tick larger than 2 1/4 x a tick smaller than 3 1/4, diagnally its 3 1/2
oh yea, you can definitly pull it apart. Its too little boards that are connected by a flat cable. The input board at the rear of the station is 2 x 3/4. The second board the one that the ipod plugs into is 3/4 x 1 1/4 Hope this helps you out. I can get pictures of this thing apart if you want, it would have to be later this afternoon though

Cool! But please don't break anything on my account!! Those dimensions you provided help... It's not that far off in terms of the needed dimensions.
Basically, I'm hoping that it can be dismantled and that the female to male connector path can be removed for re-use in a new mold. That way, the Corvette cupholder iPod dock could be easily disconnected and removed, as well.
The above described way I was planning on doing it otherwise, would be a permanent modification.
On an unrelated note, I sure wish Apple would make these things in black, also, to match their black iPods.
Just saw your edit. We must have been typing at the same time. Yes, pics would be great. I'm primarily interested to learn if the boards can be pushed closer together, almost stacked. Thank you!
im pretty sure that you can stack them, i'll snap a pic and you can see for yourself. The only issue I see, is that the interconnect cable is a little on the stiff side. Not sure how much you can bend it without breaking it.
im sure that once you see it apart, you'll get the idea. It takes up a lot less space

Sounds good. Thank you. I may have found another solution as well... Though not as good, because there isn't as much flexibility in configuring things.
I really don't need the S-Video and miniplug audio outs (which take up room), just the female to male connector. I wish someone manufactured just a short cable (like 6"-12" max) that goes from female to male. That would make things MUCH easier.
heres the thing. Any dock connector will work. What im thinking is see if there are any on ebay. All you need is the docking station piece for an ipod that has the dock connector. This way, you get a cheaper one without all the bells and whistlers.
Here is a list of ipods and pictures of them all that can use the dock connector. All but the last one. The last one, aka the first gen ipod used an actual firewire port on top to connect aka as the ipod(scroll wheel)

I don't think a different dock connector will do, as they do not have a female dock port, only firewire and USB ports on the back. Is that correct?
I've done a search and it appears that no manufacturer has created the short cable that I and apparently, a lot of others would buy in a heartbeat. A short, male to female iPod docking cable. I find that pretty amazing...

No, im not talking about a different connector. Im just saying that any dock connector will work as long as its not the firewire one that came with the first gen, the gen that no one remembers. So you are fine. Pretty much everything out there now is for the newer ipods with the dock connector.
