Okay, I defer to all the audiophiles on this one. I am about to purchase an ipod for the Vette, and am wondering for reliability which one will hold up better in the car.
I was assuming that the one with the hard drive would be more suseptable to bumps in the road, but I want all your expert opinions.
I use a 2 GB Nano to replace my factory 12-disc changer (actually, after the second changer failed). I went with that iPod because it was cheaper, held much more music than the stock changer, and besides surviving the bumps better, as you mentioned, it "should" survive the Florida heat better than a drive iPod. In Illinois, the cold of winter would be a concern, IF you drive in the winter months.
When I left work Friday, the temp under the Vette's front end hovered between 102 and 104 degrees F. That means the cockpit temp when I got in was at least that high. That's "probably" not good for a rotating disc drive like the one in the 30 - 60 GB pods.
I'm sure they're built tough, and may be fine. It was just my preference. If you have a large music collection you prefer to have with you whenever you drive, then the bigger iPods may still be the best way to go.
I'd go with the flash-based Nano, as long as it's got enough capacity for you. I've got to think it's more durable than a drive-based iPod, and it's so much smaller and cooler.
I've had an original hard drive based iPod since it was introduced by Apple, what, four, five years ago? I've since acquired a Nano and Shuffle and prefer the hard drive based iPod over either of those. Capacity is better, it doesn't scratch like the nano, and you get video. My original iPod has been through 120 degree Redding California heat in a non-airconditioned C3 convertible, so I know it can take the heat.
i have the last gen ipod, but still the one with the dock connector. its the 40g hard drive based. In the winter, the screen will be out of contrast due to the cold until the ipod warms up. In the summer, ive never had a problem. i just personally wouldnt leave it in the center consol. it comes down to how much music you want to store. If you dont mind rotating your music library, meaning that once you get bored with the 1-2,000 song whatever the limit is on those, then you have to go back and delete and add new ones or to change it up. With the bigger ipod its not a concern cause of the capacity. The downside to the bigger ipods and more music is longer scrolling time. Obviously with more music it will take you longer to scroll through your library of music. Weigh these pros and cons and see which works best for you.
