Default Speaker Enclosures for Dummies

I've got all the parts that I need to do my speaker install except for one thing, the speaker enclosures. I know they're supposed to be made from wood, but i've never done this before and would like some help. The box has a guide on it for speaker size and a ring around it, i'm assuming is for the enclosures. So how do I make one? If it helps mine are 5 1/4" round.

are you talking about making kick pods for the speakers? or are you thinking you want to make a box to put the speakers in? the speakers that it sounds like you are using don't need a box, they are more or less 'infinate baffle' design which will only require you to seperate the sound waves produced from the front of the speaker from the ones that are produced by the back.

No I just need to build some type of enclosure to hold the speakers in. I'm putting them in the stock places but the stock hardware isnt big enough. I'm just guessing that I need to put a piece of wood in front or behind? to make it stay. I already have everything out of the car, so I need them to put the speakers in.

hmm so all you need is a plate? trace out the existing speaker plate assembly onto a piece of 1/2" (or similar) mdf wood (could probably use birch plywood too) and then use the guide that came with the box to create the correct size hole for the speaker. then just grab a jig saw and start cutting.

So I have to screw the piece of wood to the car and then screw the speaker to the wood?

I looked at a few other threads and saw people using sheet metal for this, so I've got a general idea of how it works now, thanks.

Default Aftermarket Installation

I'm in the process of installing an aftermarket system as well. I pulled out the front Bose enclosures and used them and the mounting holes on the inner kick wells to make a template. I made custom enclosures out of 1/2" birch plywood to accept the Alpine 5 1/4 speakers I got for the front. The enclosure consists of a flat back piece, two triangular shaped side pieces and anotherf lat piece for the front of the enclosure, where the speaker will mount.

For the rear, I made a flat mounting plate from the same 1/2" birch plywood, using the stock speaker grills as a template. I wrapped it in black felt and will be mounting my Alpine 6 1/2" speakers to this plate and then the plate to the stock rear Bose enclosures, using the stock holes that the oem speaker grill used. (I pulled the Bose speaker and amps out of the stock enclosure.)

It should be pretty sweet when it's all done, but it's going to take a few more weekennds to get it all done. I can take some digital pics to show you what the encloures look like so far, if you're interested. I'll be doing some work on them tonight.

Thanks, I did exactly the same thing you did by using the stock enclosures for templates. Mine look good, I just need to cover up the exposed areas with new carpet.
