Default Decent iPod mounting kit for a C5?

I've been keeping my iPod in the center console of my C5 but it get's hotter than heck in there. I'm wondering if anyone has found a decent iPod mount? I'v seen the ones that mount to the vent and that's not what I'm looking for.

I use the iPod2Car device so the bottom has to be clear for the cable.

Thanks!

Mike

I use the cupholder I bought from forum member Girl In A Box. Works great!

I'm in the (very slow) process of making my own, by installing an iPod dock in my stock cupholder (I bought two Girl-In-A-Box cupholders to hold the drinks).

It can and will be done. I've already test fit the dock, but in order to be able to close the lid to the cupholder when the iPod is removed, I'm going to have to cut an opening in the bottom of the cupholder in order to lower the dock slightly and hot glue the dock in place from underneath. But for now, it's been too damned hot for me to want to pull the interior apart again, so I'm just resting it in the cupholder for now, after cutting an opening for the cable. It actually works real good this way.

But the dock will be better. To my way of thinking, it will be the perfect solution. The iPod will be tilted back slightly, within very easy reach to operate, and will be easily removed and replaced with no cords showing. I'm really picky about that kind of stuff. I don't want ANY loose wires dangling around, that make mods look like an afterthought. I want everything I do to look OEM. That's also why I wired my detector to my rear view mirror for power. I couldn't stand the thought of visible cords.

I know what you're saying. I did the same thing with my radar detector but the iPOD wasn't as big a deal to me cuz the cord is still pretty well concealed, though not perfect. I like your idea about the modifying the cupholder though, I may look in to that as well.

I don't follow you. I don't know all that much about ipod accessories. Are you saying there isome sort of a third party controller that would control the main unit remotely, yet allow the main unit to still function with the iPod2car device? Can you elaborate/show pics of what you're talking about?

The only problem I foresee with a "permanent" installation such as this is that it would make updating the iPod a real hassle and basically insure that it would be soley dedicated to in-car use, which sort of limits the attractiveness of it's portable nature.

Oh, I don't need to ask anybody. You're clearly insane. Interesting concept. You know, after my last post, I went and did a little research online and unfortunately, I couldn't track down a remote that would work with my video iPod. All the remotes I could find for that one plug in on the bottom, which is where the iPod2Car adapter must plug into. If such a remote with a pass-through capability for the connector existed, and especially if it was RF based, then the controller could probably be mounted to the cup lid, or at least under it.

Yeah, pretty cool idea, but not real practical, I'm afraid. At least, not yet. I want an iPod controller that is implanted into my brain so all I have to do is think of of a song I want to hear and whoomp, there it is... Hell, I'd even settle for voice command at this point.

Belkin Tune dock fits into the cup holder, One cable coming up from the center console. Not the best but it works better than most and it makes the IPOD controls handy.

$19.99 at Bestbuy. Only issue is the connector cable is showing. I bought the Peripheral interface and it works great. 3100 songs on demand. My only beef was the white cable to the black iPod. Nothing a little electrical tape couldn't fix.

Black vinyl spray paint would have been my choice for the cable, but hey, if the electrical tape will stay on in the heat, cool! The thing I like about my current setup is I can just lay a glove over the iPod and it's completely invisible from the outside of the car. If I'm going to be gone for just a few minutes, that is. Otherwise, I take it with me. When I install the dock (which I may do this weeked), it'll be even better.

I've been waiting for the temperature to cool down before taking the console apart and doing my mod, but it's been triple digits for the past two or three weeks it seems like, with no relief in sight, so what the heck.

There's another thread floating around where someone had gone that route and they indicated they were pleased with it. I sort of did a "test reach" and with my seating postion, accessing the iPod with that clip mount would require reaching forward a bit. With my cupholder option, it's right at my fingertips, which I really like. But you might have longer arms than I do. Good luck with it!

Ah! Well then! In that case, stick it in the glove compartment and forget about it!

As an aside, your Avatar reminds me of the time that Chuck Norris visited my junior high (now referred to as "middle school" in most circles) and gave a demonstration on the auditorium stage in 1971 or '72. If memory serves, I think he had a martial arts school right there in Pasadena at the time. I knew who he was, but I didn't really know who he was at the time. Had I known, I would have saved all my lunch money and allowance and made tracks over to his school.
