H/U Install - Starter delay - annoyance or problem?
Okay folks I'm looking for suggestions as to what might be causing this issue.
Background: About a year ago I had a new h/u (Pioneer) and amp/sub installed. When it was complete I noticed that there was a delay (about a second) before the starter would engage. I guess I was so thrilled to have the new stereo I ignored the issue. In the year since it's been installed I've never had a problem starting the car it's just that there's a delay before the starter engages.
Recently a friend of mine started my car and ask me what the problem was with the ignition. I told him there wasn't a problem just that he needed to hold the ignition for a second and the starter would engage. I guess now that someone else has raised the issue I'm wondering if I should be concerned.
My logic says that when the ignition is turned on the battery is loading the amp and h/u which is drawing power that would be used for the starter and when the amp and h/u are powered then the starter has enough juice to engage. We're only talking about a second but it its noticable.
Any ideas or thoughts as to what might be causing this? Am I okay to assume this more an annoyance than a problem? Would installing a capacitor make a difference? Has the installer taped the wrong power wire which is causing this?
Someone else here was having a somewhat similar problem, do you know where your installer tapped for switched ignition power.
Unfortunately no! I do remember him saying something about tapping a green wire in the ignition for power. I might be wrong on the color but I do remember him mentioning it as if he wasn't sure it was right.
I had the same problem...bigger battery...problem solved...
Chris,
Thanks for the info! I was hoping I wouldn't have to tear out the stereo and rewire it. When you say bigger battery I assume you're referring to cranking amps. Can you give me some specifics on what you upgraded to.
I personally use a Kinetik 1800. http://kinetikaudio.com/hc1800.asp Fits in the stock location and has a lot better storage capacity than the stock Delco. This should solve your starting delay problem. It's nice to have the juice you need on tap when you need it.
