Default iPod Question

I recently made some changes on my computer that screwed up my music indexing. Some songs were lost all together. I've got them on my iPod, but I'm wondering how to get them off the iPod and back onto the computer for backup.

I'm using Music Match.

Is it as simple as dragging songs off the iPod into a folder on my computer? I have the sinking feeling that the iPod is a one way street. I can transfer songs to it, or delete them from it, but not transfer music from it.

Jeff,

Try this:

1. Connect your iPod to your PC (I'm assuming PC ).

2. Let iTunes launch (if you are using it).

3. Double click on My Computer on your PC's desktop.

4. Look for the HD icon that represents your iPod (I'm running Win2K and mine shows up as Removable Disk (J: ) Double click on it.

5. There's a hidden folder called iPod_Control (again I'm running Win2K, might be different on WinXP); you may have to manipulate your File View properties to view hidden files/folders. Under this folder, there's a folder called iTunes with a bunch of subfolders labeled F00, F01, etc. Each of these folders should contain your iTunes music.

You should be able to copy/paste all of these folders to a folder on your HD

I'm sure there's s/w out there that will let you do this easier but hey, this is free

Larry

Ah, yes. Thanks Larry. I don't have i-tunes on my computer at all. Didn't like it. But yeah, I should be able to open the device and poke around in the folders. Thank you.

Right, you don't need iTunes to do what you have to do!!

Just an FYI, the songs will be in AAC format (Apple proprietary) which will have .m4a extensions or something like; Musicmatch or Real player should play them just fine though

Unless Musicmatch does something to allow the tracks to be stored (on the iPod) as something else

And I'm sure there's freeware s/w out there that will allow you to convert these .m4a tracks to some other format such as .mp3!

I downloaded a program from the net called SharePod, I think it was about $20. It's a .exe that you put onto the ipod, then you can plug your ipod into ANY computer with the USB cable and run SharePod on that computer. It lets you copy all of the music that's on your ipod onto the computer that you're currently connected to. I love it, but there's one problem, they seem to be having some web hosting issues at the moment, I can't find a good link to give you

I also bought another program called Tunebite for $18 that will convert protected aac music files to normal mp3 files. This way you can download songs from itunes, convert them to mp3, then use them anywhere you can play an mp3 (like on a burned CD).

Thanks, guys. That's the one thing I truly despise about Apple and iPod. All that proprietary . None of the songs I put on there had any of that crap. They went in as mp3 files, and now I have to wrestle with my own music collection to do what I want with it. Really irks me... Oh well...

Uhhh...anything you rip from a CD can be moved to the iPod as an mp3 or as a non-DRM'd file format. Even tracks purchased via iTunes can be written to CD in AIFF format and then re-ripped.

Definately you should be able to recover your library from your iPod by mounting it as a hard drive and copying them back to your computer.
