Default Aftermarket Stereo

I've an 87 coupe, without Bose and I'm pretty much a purist as far as looks go. However, I would really like to have a Cd/MP3 player installed in place a of the stock cassette system.

Is there anything manufactured that doesn’t stick out the front and look aftermarket??

I went to Crutchfield.com and everything they described as fitting needed an extension and would stick out the front.

Suggestions?

Thanks
Tim

Pioneer makes a head unit that fits the 1.5 DIN. Can look at it at MidAmerica but don't pay the $500 there, get it online elsewhere for about $200.

It's not the head unit that makes it stick out, its the mounting kit. Mine doesnt stick out at all, it's flush with the dash. Get a good mounting kit and your set!

As an alternative, I bot an MP3 player and an cassette adapter, which plugs right into my stock player, and the 40 gig MP3 player will hold something like 50k songs! I am pleased with the quality of the sound from my stock unit, and I can take the MP3 player with me wherever.

Default Single DIN Stereo

I installed a single DIN Alpine head unit in my 1991 Coupe along with the Metra installation kit. It looks good and doesn't stick out at all.

Default Double Din

Has anyone ever installed a double din in the c4 like a 92-95 style dash? I would like to see some pics. I went to a custom stereo place today that does excellent work and they said they could make a double din fit beautifully. Anyone have one of those installed??

Default Pioneer 1.5 DIN Unit

I just bought another 1988 Anniversary with the Bose Stereo installed. I just want to add a simple single CD player and I've seen the Pioneer 1.5 DIN unit that suposedly "drops in".

I noticed two types available on eBay, one is amped and one is not. I assume since the Bose speakers have their own amps (if I understand correctly) then I should not get the unit with already amplified output.

Yes/no?

Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with this Pioneer unit?

Thanx in advance,
Jim

I will say this for the upteenth time:

I hate that Pioneer. It's old school and sounds like crap.

Don't bother with messing with interfacing to the blose speakers. It's just not going to do you anything worth listening to.

Don't know about that Pioneer, but in other applications where an amplified signal has been sent to another amplifier, there were noticable to unbearable levels of static that were amplified. I wouldn't do it.

Bogus, please excuse the ignorance but I have a couple of questions:

1. What is meant by 1 din, 1,5 din, and 2 din?

2. One or more of my Bose speakers are popping, and as I live in South Africa stripping them out and sending them to Dr, Dons for repair would be a mission. Can I simply replace the Bose speakers with the usual 6x9 speakers at the rear and 5” or 6” in the front without replacing the head unit?

Try repairing the Bose Amps yourself. The problem is usually due to bad capacitors, which you can replace or have a quality electrionics place do for you. There is an excellent write-up with schematics, explaining how to do this in the ZR1 registry web site. Go to the ZR1 misc. page and search for Bose Amplifier http://www.zr1netregistry.com/misc.htm

The link takes you to the Adobe PDF doc that has all you or a local shop needs to know to test and fix the speaker amps.

I have one of those Pioneer 1.5 DIN units that I just removed from my `87 to install a new Pioneer DEH7800MP units. I had the old unit for about a year. No problems with it. I`ll be listing it in the parts for sale section, when I get off my butt

DIN is the German version of SAE. They established the size of head units. a 1 din is a single head unit, much like you see in the aftermarket. 90% of all aftermarket heads are 1 din. A 1 din head is about 2" high by 7" wide or so, I don't remember the exact measurement. 178mm x 53mm...

1.5 din is half again as high, about 3" high. 1984-1989 Vettes are 1.5 Din.

and a double din is about 4" high, and are the same as what is found in a 1990-1996 Corvette dash. 178mm x 106mm. Whatever that works out to be!

You will have to replace the head to replace the speakers. I know there are adaptors available to use the bose speakers with a newer head, but not the other way around. I imagine getting adaptors would be hard enough, too...

You can remove the bose speakers, but please, don't use 6x9s, I hate their sound... 8" subs will fit in the rear with no real problems.

This question should be in the audio section, too.
