I hate aftermarket components taht look out of place, so mounting the receiver on the windshield or sticking it to the dash was out, so I mounted my receiver on the headliner (Z06) between the visors. I think it looks great, and is out of the way...
I powered it off a wire I ran for my radar detector and taped the antenna to the headliner (it didnt pick up worth a damn attached to the metal crossmember).
I used a rather thick (~.125 inch) piece of metal to mount it. I dont want it moving around on me in the turns. I made a pattern of the bolt holes on the back of the unit and drilled the metal, and i had to cut it (excuse to use the ole torch ) to make room for the jacks. After I made sure the bracket would clear the crossmembers on the roof and bolt up nicely, I measured exactly where I wanted to put the unit. I spent a good bit of time on this so it didnt end up crooked or something stupid like that. I then very carefully cut the headliner and bolted it up. I taped the FM transmitter on the headliner perpendicular to my antenna so it would pick up better, and it does great! Finally I soldered the powersupply into my radar detector wiring near the rear view and put the headliner back in. I had to play with the XM antenna a bit and found that taping it to the top of the headliner about half way back gives the best reception.
