Default Sound problem from stock stereo

I have a problem that is boggling me, dealer said I needed new stereo, long story short, I got 2 from friends to "test" problem.

Scenario.

Current stock headunit plays ONLY the rear speakers, no sound from front, terrible rececption on fm, none on am. The reception gradually go to the current point, the front speakers were working fine, parked car, got in the next day and poof, only rears. This is the point the dealer said I needed a new head unit.

I borrowed 2 different headunits, both are giving me identical, but different from the original headunit problems.
They both seem to work on left rear and right front only, and at a very low volume, I did not test reception before I got frustrated and put original back in, at least I can hear that at road speed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Any idea why 2 headunits have same problem and original has different problem?

I have thrown a good bit of money toward getting this fixed and still stuck with nothing, any suggestions appreciated! Not really too educated on sound, stereos etc, but I know I have a problem somewhere.

edit: where is the sound processor, anything I can look at or test to see if it is this part?

I believe its under the dash somewhere ill be honest ive never messed with one but i have heard of them going out. Here is what I would try will cost you 10 bucks and you can always return it, go to local autoparts store and get a gm wiring harness take your radio out and plug it in, put a 9 V battery to each pair of speaker wires one at a time and see if the cordinating speaker makes a popping noise this will eliminate any wiring problems between your harness and the door speakers. It is my understanding that if all the speakers pop like they should ur bose sound processor is the culprit but i could be wrong

Close, but no speakers will pop unless you power up the factory amps. My suggestion would be to spend a few hundred bucks on an aftermarket radio and speakers.

Actually im right depending on what car he has, if its a c5 the only thing the bose amp powers are the subs in the doors the speakers are all powered off the radio... i assumed its a c5 but could be wrong

Anyone have a definitive answer on where the sound processor is located?
And what does it look like, could I potentially have a loose connection on it?

If I go the replacement route, I heard about some soundgate device that allowed you to keep stock HU?

Would I actually NEED subs and amp? I really do not like the thump thump of most of the sub cars I have heard. The bose really doesnt put out a lot that I have noticed, even though it has the subs.

Edit: Also, anyone know of a reputable shop that does aftermarket stereos in the Raleigh-Rocky Mount-Greenville NC area?

Thanks

I really doubt its the sound processor, however, it may be partly involved. It would not affect the FM or AM reception.

On this goofy picture, it is Part # 29:

In this photo, the processor is barely visible. In fact, all you can see are the connectors and wire. Look just below the ignition key slot.

It is a beotch to get out. If you are successful, it would look something like this (on a C5):
