Those pictures are not surface mount? that is thru-hole soldering..
Send it to me, I will put it together for you.. (14 years of Surface mount soldering)
oh i thought the things on the back (relay looking things) were surface mount. i'll send it to you if you really want to do it, that would help me out a lot! I'm not all that confident on my thru-hole either. i've done it but i'm worried that my novice soldering may affect sound quality.
i'll send you a pm
I'm waiting for a feedback from them to tell me what kit i need exactly... i think it is the most expensive one...lol

the guy that is selling me this dac says that i need a preamp stage to control volume after the dac. makes sense to me. the zapco unit and the alpine pxa-h701 both use this same technique. do you have another idea? i'm open to all possibilities

I was thinking in home theater terms. Normally an outboard DAC will feed back into a pre-amp, which obviously ain't how you're doing things. My bad.
wow... the owner (i assume) just offered to build it for me free of charge! this guy has been really helpful too. i recommend going with this guy if any of you are insane like me and go with a dac
