I would like to change the stereo in my 93 (Bose cd/cass) but I'm not a total audiophile. I do not relish the idea of installing all new speakers and wiring. A few questions:
Who makes a stereo with matching orange illumination?
If I installed aftermarket speakers with a new stereo, can I use existing speaker wiring or, because it's Bose, do I have to change evereything?
If I installed aftermarket stereo and kept Bose speakers (with adapter) would I hear any improvement in sound quality over the stock Bose HU?
Well, as far as wiring is concerned, don't use the existing hardware. It is NOT friendly to adapting. And it's not hard to run new wire. The FAQ shows where the reciever module is, that's the output brain of the system. The head unit is really a dummy and does nothing more than provide a low level signal (some proprietary thing) to the reciever module. This adds another layer of complexity to the system. Add in the fact that the wire is not designed to do more than carry a signal, and not any power, it's not up to the job of even the 20 watts a head unit can produce... the result could be noise. For the price of a roll of 16 gauge, it's money well spent.
Orange? Check Alpine. I know my 7998 (no longer available) is changeable from green to amber. And it looks pretty nice in the dash as night. The main screen is black/white, but all the buttons are amber. The main screen is not changable. But looks fine, none the less.
I make reference to adaptors in the FAQ. I don't like them. For a couple of reasons:
1) they are prone to creating more problems then they solve.
2) I don't like the sound quality... it is no better than the bose, and the wrong adaptors are WORSE than bose.
As an aside, we always ask (generation matters not) if someone has read their respective FAQ, cause it's amazing how many folks miss them (or choose to ignore them). If people could include the fact they have reviewed it, it will help us help you better!
Eclipse CD2000. I have it in my car and it matches exactly. I mean, it looks factory. Not a bad little unit, $200.00 most places.
BTW, take the time to change the speakers and run new wiring. It will be worth it.
