In addition to my amp problems I discovered the following.
I was sitting in my car tonight becoming less and less satisified with the way my system sounded. The fronts would distrort badly with just the hu powering them. I thought this was peculiar. The stereo was on and I was unlodading the boxes and the origional system from the trunk and I discovered this.
He was supposed to put in JL VR650 csi (which he charged me for). He put in VR650 cxi. I didnt see any cross overs either. Would the sound from these 2 speakers be as different as I think it would be. Like night and day ? Just to make sure I pulled the panel and sure enough coax not component. Is this why they distort (sounds like bass overload) ?
Now the doors must be taken apart again, the dash again etc........ I am so pissed I am shaking.
I would assume the CSi would sound better since they are actually components, but I doubt it is a night and day difference. The best speakers in the world are going to sound like crap playing off a deck, power is your friend....but I would be pissed if I spent more money then what I got....
do you have bass boost on? or some kind of sound processing?
A crossover filters out certain freq depending on where the crossover points are. The coax's that you have have simpler crossovers, with smaller slopes...but it shouldnt sound *that* much different
I quess the biggest thing is I heard the exact system I wanted in another guys vette. Specified what I wanted and he put in different fronts (as outlined above) different backs, which I didnt even mention he put in Pioneer Premier 5.25 in the back. I was considering Pioneer so I kinda let that slide. And now I am doubting that story about the 2sd amp not working so he ran the speakers off the hu.
Bottom line I wanted what I heard which was in my opinion a good system and I got much much less.
I wanted: Estimate 1689.75 installed
JL VR650 CSI
JL VR525 CXI
JL Stealthbox sub
2 JL appropriatly sized amps 1 for sub 1 for speakers.
I got : Charged 1469.93
JL VR650CXI
Pioneer Premier TSA530P
JL Stelathbox sub
1 JL E1400D Amp
So I heard a system that was great I got a system that the more I listen to it I hate for a 200.00 savings.
Those speakers are always going to sound bad on a head unit. It is not likely the speaker is distorting but you are clipping the head unit. You need to put an amp on the speakers.
You should get what you pay for. I would go back and take care of that.
Going back today as soon as he opens. I am insisting he install the origional system at the origional price. I never should have accepted the car on Monday, but I couldnt pick it up till late in the day and this is not a place to leave overnight.
The VR650-CXi do have x-overs, but they are not external (no x-over). The x-overs in both go between the tweeter and the mid only, there is no HP filter for the mid in any component system that I know of (two way systems).
If these speakers are connected directly to a Bose system, I can think of a lot of reasons that it (or any aftermarket speaker) would not work well.
