Replacing my Pheonix Gold components with something of better quality after blowing both tweeters. I am looking for the best SQ and medium-high sound levels. I will continue to run my Phoenix Gold 70x2rms/150x2peak amplifier.
I am looking at the eD6500, the Boston Acoustic SL series, the CDL-61 or the Diamond Audio s600a.
Does anyone have experience with these and which are the best of the 3? I am leaning toward the Diamond Audio based on internet reviews but have not heard them for myself. My buddy has the Bostons and they sound about the same as my Phoenix Gold did with some slight improvements.
If the Diamonds are the hex series, I would personally stay away. I had a set of their top of the line 6.5 components and was pretty disappointed expecially with the midbass performance. From what I know if those were the 6.5" PG ti mids they are pretty well regarded (not sure what year/part #) and you may consider just picking up a set of tweets from somewhere like madisound.com or zalytron.com or parts express. Just stay with 4 ohm units and you will be able to maintain the crossover point on your existing passive crossovers.
Another option would be a set of the DLS Iridium or Nobellium speakers. I like their midrange a lot, great with jazz especially IMO. The ED's are certainly popular as well and get good reviews here. If you want to get into the DIY stuff and putting together your own component set let us know and we can help steer you to some choices there as well or check out diymobileaudio.com .. great site tons of info and lots of reviews on drivers etc.
EDI6500s are killer IMO at the price point I dont think anyone else can touch them. CDT CLs are nicer but its deff a lower end speaker then the edi6500
I stayed away from the Diamonds because they were the Hex series. I did not really want to spend more than $300 on the set and based on the number of Corvettes that ran different sets, I settled on the CDT CL-61's.
Installed them last night and they have a lot more midbass than the Phoenix Gold speakers. I'll move the PG to the rears some day if I feel I need more sound. Definately a nice step up and according the the specs they should hold the power much better. I only got the volume up to 35% and they sounded great...nice, clean, and loud.
