Default 1.5 din????

Ok audio pros...maybe this is a stupid question, but...why does crutchfield say that the 1.5 din units will not fit??? isnt that the opening we have? Specifically Pioneer DEH-P77DH. This was recomended by the local high end audio shop. No its not really high end but it fits my needs pretty close. I want this to look as close to stack as possible, better sound, SIRIUS ready, MP3 playback. Id love one of the double din units too but i just dont want to hack up my dash, although many have done it sucessfully and it looks great. So is there something im missing on this? does anyone know another unit that will fit in the fatory opening without having a plastic "filler" needed with a single din unit? I just dont like the looks of those either...I know...im picky. thanks guys.

unless the p77dh has been updated, it does not have mp3 support. the unit itself is pretty old(i remember it being around in 2000 when i was looking for a HU in my firebird). not many manufacturers even offer a 1.5 din size HU now, if ever. i think there was an older alpine and maybe a jensen that wasn't too bad. neither of which are made nowadays.

Thats correct, no MP3 on that model. But it seems to be the only 1.5 out there. I found a few slick single din units this afternoon, a JVC that has a 3.5in dvd screen. you can hook up a camera to it too. But im not too sure about the quality on JVC. I guess you just cant have everything your way huh? Anyone know where to get the single din install kit with the LED's behind it, has the Z06 on it that lights up. that might help it to not look SO bad.

one other solution if you don't want to have a blank space or opening for the extra .5 din would be to go with a center channel speaker or eq. the clarion srk5 has been talked about on this forum i believe for a center channel to give true 5.1 surround.

I have the Pioneer DEH-P77DH in my 88 Vette Coupe and I love it! It fits just fine. I am a big advocate of Crutchfield and have purchased many items from them, but trust me when I say the Pioneer deck will fit, has a considerable amount of power, and sounds GREAT matched with the 5 1/4" Infinity speakers I have in the front and 6x9" Infinity speakers in the rear.

pentavolvo, thanks for posting. I was really wanting a good pic of that setup! looks good. Ive used JVC in the past and was not terribly pleased with them, but it wasnt downright bad, just not that good. but that has been several years ago. I was wanting something that will look nice and have plenty of features...found this http://mobile.jvc.com/product.jsp?mo...hId=132&page=2
looks like a pretty slick unit, anyone used this or seen it in person? How has JVC progressed over the years?
theboogieman, any chance of you puting up a picture of your setup? I know its not a C5 but id still like to see it. If i cant find anyone with much good to say about the JVC I may still end up with the 1.5 din. thanks guys!

decent 1.5 DIN units are pretty much non existant. My vote would be for the Basic 1 DIN HU and a .5 DIN EQ or other sound processor. Alpine makes a wide range of quality .5 DIN EQs I had a ERE G180 and a 3321 until i upgraded to the ERA G320.

Here is the reality: 1.5 and double DIN heads are the bastard stepchildren of the audio industry.

Double DIN units are getting better, yes, but 1.5 DIN have been totally neglected. Personally, I hate 1.5 DIN heads.

The volume is in the single DIN heads. It's that simple. That is where the features are, that's where the tech is.

The DEH-P77DH has been around since about 1932... I ain't kidding, that thing is OLD, and it's still in the Pioneer catalog for folks who just have to have a 1.5 DIN head unit. It's also woefully overpriced in specialty catalogs.

Do yourself a favour and go look at something newer, and better.

I'm going to agree with TRF and recommend finding a good 1DIN unit and add a .5 DIN processor below it. I installed an AudioControl Three.1 in mine. Looks good and really boosts the voltage out of the HU.
