I think this thread is being done a tremendous disservice by not having an image...
Scott you do Hollywood work, you should recommend this thing to lighting directors. Would solve ALL sorts of issues when they're showing those driving scenes where you need to see the actors faces.
Lol. It is kind of cool. Reminds me of Macintosh audio equipment. Supposed to be timeless (Macintosh design), but it appears to have designed circa 1972.
What makes those HU's listed in that auction so much better than whatever it is we choose from here? Like more mainstream brands (i.e. Alpine, Sony, Eclipse, etc)? I have a 5 year old Alpine HU in my 'Stang with 4v preouts and other junk that make it sound awesome.
there are a lot of factors that will make one head unit 'better' then another. what kind of dac they use (1 bit, 20 bit, 24 bit to name a few) the filtering stage after the dac, the output stage and what opamps are used, how the lines are driven (how cleanly it can put out; say, a 4v output), the eq's and all the digital goodies, and even the volume control. if you go over to www.diyaudio.com you'll see people spending hundreds of dollars on 'volume pots'. it's just a combonation of these things (and probably a bunch that im missing) that make some of those head units so much better.
I think it sez the tube is in the preamp stage.
Soooo no tube output.
I used to fix tube equipment back in another lifetime.
Fixed equipment thru the hybrid days, the discrete transistor/semiconductor days and on up through the LSI stuff.
I was SO GLAD when tube stuff was gone.
It's probably a simple triode low level amp. Maybe a dual triode for 2 channels.
THere's no magic to integrating tubes into stuff. Impedance/level match in/out and away you go.
That one is absolutely NOT the first. Heck, wasn't Marconi the first? LOL.
Yep, it is ugly too. But it DOES play MP3's.
