Default Cut rear mat for sub?

I recently installed a jl stealth box with the screened cover. It sounds great. I decided to cover that with a lloyd's mat with the emblem. I think it looks much better with the mat. The problem is the mat muffles alot of the sub. Has anyone customized their mat? I thought about cutting a small section out and sewing in some kind of black mesh material? Any ideas ?

Good question- I know people have done this as I've seen photos but just never seen in person. Maybe someone will chime in.

Cut the hole then take it to an upholstry shop and have them sew an edge trim around the hole and a piece of mesh. I've had this done. It makes it look like it belongs.

Do you have any pics. I went to an upholsterer with that idea, but knowing that my car is entered in shows, they weren't positive it would come out the way I wanted it or the way theywanted it for that matter. Once you cut ther's no turning back. PICS woul be greatly appreciated!

the process you are looking for is called 'surging' (sp?) you should be able to go to any carpet store and they'll be able to hook you up. surging is different from 'binding' that you traditionally see on carpeting. Binding uses a piece of cloth that is sewn onto the ends of the carpet to keep it from falling apart. surging is the process of taking thread and coiling it around the end...to keep it from falling apart.

hope this helps. i'd try your luck with the search engine, i know this question has been asked before and people have posted pictures.

Thanks. I basically got the idea in my head, but I'd like too see one if someone has done it. I enter my car in the occasional show and want it to look professional. If not I could normally leave the mat out (put it in just 4 shows), but I don't think it looks as good without the mat and I assume the mat does a little dampening of heat as well as sound.

There was someone on here the other day that did it where they cut the mat to fit under the cover. I don't want to cut that much of the mat. I'm thinking something like the size of a shoebox cover. I recently saw a pic of a mat for an frc and it looked like it was made where the cover was still accessable like normal, similar maybeto the cut I heard about?
