I am at the point that I need to decide how to do my amp rack cover.
here is the concerned area:
it will be flush with the door on the left of the picture. I am thinking of making a window for each amp, either open for cooling or under plexi along with fans for cooling. if I skip the plexi and make the open spot, there will be a vented cover using grill cloth. even with the Plexi I will make cover so the plexi is not always seen
So what would you do??
Lastly if I do Plexi, I was thinking of red LEDs to light up the plexi, but how far apart should they be spaced?
im thinkin plexi would be the coolest. scott and some others should know how far to space the leds out for the lighting. it would be cool to see the ed amps logos through plexi all lit up
I assume that the remaining cover would be MDF, right? Get a pattern and cut a C4 logo into the MDF and carpet in, as long as it's thick enough.
Or, get one cut and glue it then carpet over, to make it raised.
I was hoping NOT to use MDF, as it is heavy. but I may end up with that.. the cover will be 3/4" thick , but with doing Plexi I will have three 1/4 pieces glued
but the middle section will be hollow, especially if I use LEDs on the plexi..
I only got to the cardboard stage though so far
Penta,
As long as my vette is movable and I can get the stang on my Kwiklift it should not be a problem.. Beer and Pizza will be on you though.. LOL
haha cool cool i can handle beer and pizza... im hopin we can get this hpipe to seal up on there im gonna try and get it straight next time im home seeing as it has a small offset in it othrewise i might just call the guy who did some of my other work for a good cost, and have him do it since im gettin lazy and he has a full shop

i think i'm the last person to be giving advice on amp rack design :-( ... but i think id like to see what the window look like a bit larger.
when you say you're going to use led to light up the plexi, does taht mean you're going to etch something into the covers of the plexi and you want to side light it? or did you actually mean that you just want some led's in there to light up the amp under the plexi?
one idea i have is to acutally mount led's under the amps, raise the amps up just a hair (~1/8") with some standoffs or even a couple washers. and have the amp look like it's floating and glowing. then get some white (or orange) led's and light up the box from the top
did you actually mean that you just want some led's in there to light up the amp under the plexi?
This is what I was thinking
As for raisng the amps, I am not going to go that far yet.. I want to keeo it some what simple..
As for a larger window I can go larger on the sides of the rack, but not the front to back. most has to do with intergrating the rack cover with the Storage doors..
gee, it would be neato, but I donno who is gonna cut it.
a thought, if you can get a shop to cut a vinyl decal, you could cut it out with a scroll saw. It doesn't have to be PERFECT, just very nice, cause the carpet would cover up any glitches.
Love the window idea. If you really want to be creative, you could do a little etching on the plexi and the LEDs would really set it off.
Home depot offers 1/2" MDF if 3/4" is too heavy for your application.
Cooling fans are a HIGHLY RECCOMENDED. the good news is that fans smaller then 70mm draw so little current you can run them off the run on lead without a relay and run the ground to your amp's ground.
