Default Front Speakers

I just purchased a 1993 w/14,000 mi. When I got it home and finally had a decent day to drive it, I noticed that the CD player wouldn't accept a disk (just clicks) and the front speakers don't work. Is this standard for C4 radios? What do I need to do to get the front speakers working based on other peoples past experience? Also the seat adjustment that has the three little buttons and the toggle switch (not the power seat button) doesn't seem to do anything. I need help, this is my first vette and I'm lost here.

Welcome to the Forum! You will want to read the C4 FAQ's at the top of the section.
It sounds like your HU and front speakers need to be refurbished. You can send them to Dr Don's, or you can replace the Bose with new aftermarket stuff, which is what I did (see sig).

Randy,

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an HU on the front speakers? Is there a fuse that could possibly be blown? Is this really common on the Bose systems? There is only 14,000 miles on the car, how does this stuff go bad?

HU is headunit (radio). each speaker has it's own amp, and should have it's own fuse, but I don't think blown fuses is as common as amps going bad. Everyone here says that Bose sucks, but you have to realize that Bose was given a budget in which to get the best sounding system in a race car... it was probably a very small budget...

Vince.

Thanks, I have Bose in my home an they are fantastic, you're probably right about them being on GM budget. I will check my fuses. If I go aftermarket on the speakers, will I still need an amp on each one? Let me know if anyone else has left the factory radio in and changed out the speakers. I appreciate all the help, this forum is awesome, you can't buy this kind of help.

I would just get an aftermarket radio with features you want that also has a build in amp. The newer head units have as much as 20watts per channel rms. Several people here make nice custom mounts for aftermarket radios. 4 quality speakers and a nice radio will sound good. You can always add on subs and seperate amps.

If you decide to keep the stock headunit and just replace the speakers, you'll need to amplify each channel - 4 speakers - 4 channel amp, 2 speakers - 2 channel amp. but you'll need custom adapters to go from the bose HU to aftermarket amplifiers. You are probably looking at around $100 just in adapters. IMO, I would invest that towards aftermarket radio and speakers. Do a search for HUMOUNT and yuo'll see some nice aftermarket installs.

I have found 2 speakers with amps that work. What is the chance that the front speakers will work if I replace both speakers and amps without any work on the HU? How do I get the front speakers out?

Thanks, Jim

Jim,
CD players in these cars are typical problems. Dr. Don's should be able to fix the problem.
As for the speakers, there is a good chance that the amp for each speaker is the problem rather than the speaker itself.
The front speakers are easy to access. Just remove the carpeted door sills and trim and the speakers and amps are enclosed in the plastic speaker enclosures. Each component cam be removed individually.
Be careful of the plastic tabs at the end of the enclosures when removing to avoid breakage.
I removed my whole system from my 93 Ruby a couple of months back and replaced with aftermarket components. The job took me a couple of days with a fair amount of custom work for the speakers involved. I would recommend this route as long as you are willing to do the installation yourself. Otherwise, there will be some serious labor costs involved.
Finally, if you want to keep your Bose system, I do have amps and speakers available for a very reasonable price. You can find my thread by searching for 1993 Bose Audio components.

Good Luck and Good driving.

I've seen many scenarios where the speakers simply became disconnected. This kind of fix is a no brainer but often overlooked because the solution is so simple.

Because the car is 14 years old with only 14K miles

the buttons on the seat are for the Lumbar support, the toggle switch runs the pump to fill them.. the 3 buttons deflate 3 different bags

the pump membrane is probably broken and that is why it does not work.

Jeff,

Thanks, the funny thing is both seats are like this. I've found some new bladders and will replace one and see if this does the trick before I buy the other. I'm just trying to get everything in pristine order, **** I know, but that's the way I am with my cars. I am going to look into chuckleheads speakers and amps too, to keep everything stock. Thanks for the help, as a first time vette owner, my eyes are getting opened very quickly.

SUCCESS,

Special thanks to Chucklehead (Deane), he sent me new front speaker amps, plugged them in and the speakers roared to life.

Deane,

I finally finished shoveling myself out, 3 hours this morning. I will head out this afternoon and put your check in the mail. I sat in the vette last night and listen to the stereo while I detailed the interior, what else are you gonna do in a snowstorm?? Thanks again.
