1. I know this is seriously basic but I have never backed up anything. Someone at work did it for me and I don't keep files at home.
How do I back up my 150 songs on my ITunes?
B. I burned a CD but could not play it in an older vehicle. I assume it was because the IPod music is MP3 format. How can I convert it so that it will play on an older cd player?

By default iTunes rips audio in MPEG-4 audio format and the files are stored as .m4a files. The default format can be changed to MP3 but it doesn't sound like that is something you would have done, unless your buddy did it for you. The files are stored in an iTunes directory within the My Music folder in Windows. You can just burn them to a CD or DVD as data files to back them up.
For older stereos that can't play MP3 you need to burn the songs as an Audio CD. This is also an option within iTunes. Create a playlist of songs you want to burn, keeping it under 80 minutes (max for CD audio) and then use iTunes to burn that playlist to CD.

if i remember right, you can change your burn options in the preferences under the burn tab. you can change it from mp3 cd, to audio cd and there might be one more option.
