I have an older (late 90s vintage) Sony Hi8 camera that has a firewire port on it. Copying videos from it to my Mac takes quite a bit longer than just moving an MP4 file over. But, I mounted the camera up and took a drive.
Very clear, very precise audio (and very loud road noise, as expected). But, the engine revs are crystal clear. About 3 minutes into the ride, the camera stopped recording on me, for some reason. So I need to figure that one out. But, aside from that, I may have my solution.

Yes, MP4 files are much smaller with lower resolution and will of course move faster but not any easier. Thanks to iMovie. That must be one of those Hi8/digital hybrid cams if it has firewire on it.
Sounds like you've finally proven that it's the camera at fault as we suspected from early on. Good audio there. Just need to experiment with mic placement for better sounds.

Not the case. Doesn't matter what software I use, it's still way easier and less time-consuming to copy an MP4 off the Sanyo (which connects to the Mac like an external drive) than it is to 'record' it off the Sony. It takes a couple of minutes, vs. however long the video is. In other words: if it's a 20 minute video, then it'll take 20 minutes to copy of off the Sony. Instead of a couple of minutes to copy it off the Sanyo.

Yep. And buy myself a large, USB external drive for Final Cut Express scratch space.
glad you narrowed it down to the camera, but too bad that its the camera cause its an expensive fix.
The only real expensive part is that I have to eat the cost of the Sanyo. It's utterly useless to me, and Sanyo has just released the next version of it. So even if I do EBay it, I won't be able to get what I paid for it. :-(
But I don't need to buy another. I can just use the Sony I have. Time-consuming, yes. Not expensive though.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, et al. This has been incredibly frustrating (and educational).
eSATA enclosure, and an Expresscard adapter for the external drive. That'll be faster than the built-in firewire400 port, and I won't have to worry about the camera.
