Default 85 or 86 head unit/ speaker options

I read the FAQ and it had a lot of great info. My Father-in-law has a 85 or 86 (not sure) vette that he has tricked out on everything but the audio system. I do know that the CD player quit working. Not sure if its BLOSE or Delco. Im looking for options to replace it as a b-day/fathers day present. He wants to do as little modifications as possible. I was thinking that the Pioneer DEH-P77DH might be a good option but its so busy looking. He is not much of an audiophile but just wants something clean looking and as close to stock as possible but better sounding.

Does anyone have pics of the Pioneer in dash? Any other good options out there that are clean looking and dont require much mods. I know quite a bit about car audio but know nothing about Vettes. I know what brands to avoid and such. I would like to see some single DIN CD pic with nice dash kits that give it a clean look. I have searched the forum and couldnt find much.

We do plan to add mid grade speakers (CDT, ARC, etc)all the way around but probably no amp or sub. At least I havent talked him into that yet. What speaker sizes work the best without cutting?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dont bother getting nice speakers unless you definitely plan on getting an amp later. Head unit power sucks for component sets, especially competing with the road noise of a C4.

Also.

Get a single din unit. Cheaper, and more modern with new features.

I think you might like Nakamichi or Eclipse. The first being more 'stock' looking, the second being clean, more expensive, but nice looking.

Aftermarket speakers are going to sound a whole lot better than the 22 year old pieces of you know what that are in there now. Paper cones that had broken down long ago. Some simple CDT coax's, maybe Polk, Infinity or even ARC KAR series. Nothing too exotic.

Thanks for the advise tho. I tried Sounddomain for pics but only found a few head unit shots. Anyone here have some nice pics of single DIN in 85?

Coaxes will be fine on head unit power, from the brands listed I thought yuo were doing components.

Thanks so much. Thats the kind of info I needed to here. Looks like I will be going single din. Any idea of the best dash kit?
