Default crossover question

I have polk db5250 components in the front of my C4 the crossover they came with have theese specs
2-way crossover network (4,000 Hz, 12 dB/octave)

my question is if I make adjustments at the amp do the crossovers that came with the speakers overide the adjustments?

nope, the amp only supplies the input starting frequency...
Let's assume it is a "high-pass" filter on the amp set to 100hz.
So 100hz and up go to the x-over. The x-over then filters that and sends 100 hz up to 4500hz to the woofer and then 4501 hz and up to the tweeter.

So you basically have a bandpass for the woofer and high pass for the tweeter. I hope you have a sub in there somewhere, or else I would just turn off the amp's x-over.

here is what I have
Eclipse EA 4000 4 chanel 75 x 4 powering the front polk db5250 components and a pair of polk DB691 6x9 3 ways in the stock rear locations.

a Kicker ZX400.1 powering a Kicker dual voice coil 10" CVR sub in a custom enclosure

I know how to set the amp inputs/gains but am not to sure about where the crossovers should be. it sounds good now with all of the set about in the middle, but I may be missing some sound quality if they were set differenntly

here are the settings for the Eclipse amp

Adjustable High-Pass Frequency (30–500Hz)

Low-Pass Frequency (50-500Hz)

Adjustable Bass-Boost Level (45Hz, 0–8dB)

there are two sets of theese one for the front and one for the rear channel.

and on the Kicker

low pass frequency 50-200 Hz

low pass slope 24 dB

bass boost frequency 40 Hz

any suggestions ??

ok on the speaker amp no bass boost. set the highpass for front and rear and set it at 80z. on the sub amp lowpass filter 80hz and maybe a little bit of bass boost if you need it, deff no more then half bass boost this is how ppl blow subs by crankin the bass boost

Hi pass and Lo pass should theoretically be set at equal freq. 80-100hz is generally a good area for subwoofer crossover. I'm not familiar with that amp but the boost controls sound like Hi pass filters for the bass. Probably 6db/octave rolloffs. As posted above, the energy below 40hz is generally not audible by humans and only causes mechanical woofer failure. So put something on with some heavy bass and roll off as much of that sub harmonic stuff as you can before you can hear its affect.

Default Start with 80 Hz

Start with the 80\80 setting listed above and then adjust to get a sound you like. Set the levels of all eq to 0 or flat. No bass eq on the amp and no bass or treble adjustments on the stereo. Zeros on everything. You will want the tweakability later.

My advice would be to shut off the subwoofer while you are tweaking the smaller drivers. You want them to play as low as possible while still sounding good at the volumes you normally listen to.

As a just in case, crank them a little louder than normal and make sure they dont distort or sound poppy or scratchy. Play some really dynamic tunes (punchy kick drums, synthesized bass maybe) for this one so you can find the extremes.

Once this is adjusted, start adding sound from the subwoofer by adjusting the gain at first so that it matches the levels of the front stage speakers. You should be able to feel the sub but not really able to locate it by sound.

Once you think you are close on the gain, you can make tweaks with the crossover point so that you get a blend with the front stage.

After your levels are good, use the eq to make minor adjustments. In general use cuts on the peaks but you want to be very conservative with any gains that you add into the sound.
