I'm struggling with molding a bezel to accomodate a double din Avic D1 using the abs sludge method from this site. I've cut the bezel and now I'm trying to fill in the sides & fill in the center bar with abs sludge. Seems like the stuff doesn't want to set & I'm having a tough time setting up a mold for the plastic to set in. Some tips & advice here would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
ps- any advice on the avic install would be great!
I used the fiberglass jelly resin I bought in the local parts store. I just put small amounts on at a time. Once I got the bezel close to where i wanted it to be, I put a light coat of bondo over the fiberglass jelly resin making it easier to get final finish. I used black hammer paint i bought at WalMart to give me a texture appearance and then sprayed a coat of clear from Walmart as well over it to take away some of the gloss. This is what my finished product turned out to look like.

Well mine was for my CarPC.. which I still owe you guys pictures of my install.. but I used an epoxy that was made to adhere to abs to hold mine together. Then once I had that sanded smooth I used bondo to smooth things out.
This is a great thread - I didn't know that there was other 'workable' options other than the 'ABS Sludge' method, which I wasn't really looking forward to using (or making up).
What methods are you guys using (specifically bbently40) to secure the touchscreen LCD into the bezel? I've got pretty big (think jimmydean sausage) fingers and I tend to press on things hard, and I want the LCD to be attached to my bezel in a rock-solid manner.

Any input?

what do you mean by 'the stuff doesn't seem to want to set'? does that mean it's not hardening? if so, is it still watery or is it just soft?
if it's soft then you may need to play with your mixture. try thining it out with some m.e.k (or a.b.s. if you used that) this will dry with less air bubble and be harder. I usually work with two consistencies, one soupy and one with a mustard consistency. i make barriers with some tape and fill in the cavities with the thick stuff and let it set. then i go back with the thinner stuff and add layers and sand to get the shape i'm looking for. if you have some deep area then go and add some of the thick stuff to add some material to make your job easier.
I dont get on here that much lately (no free time) but feel free to email me if you have specific questions.
Thanks Scott. I reworked my mixture & got it to set up well. I formed up my bezel using cardboard covered with duct tape - the abs didn't stick to the tape hardly at all. Still working on sanding the bezel to get it looking right. I'll post some pix when I get the thing done. Fun fun fun!
