I've done a couple searches to no avail (with the exception of the speed wire explained in the C5 audio FAQ). I'm doing an install of a Pioneer Avic-D1 & am in need of some advice on locating the speed sensor wire & reverse wire. Any pictures of each wire & how to get to them would be FANTASTIC. Feel free to chime in with advice if you've tackled an AVIC or similar head unit installation in a C5. Thanks in advance!

Well, I found out a little bit,
I looked around on avic411.com...

"Speed Sense PURPLE (AC) ECU MODULE TO THE RIGHT OF GLOVE BOX PIN 14 OF A 26 PIN PLUG" ,

Also, I read, not sure if true, But since stock stereo has the 'speed compensated volume' thingy, there should be a vss in the harness somewhere....???


As for the reverse, I am gonna splice into the green wire that goes to one of the reverse lights, that should work Id think.


(This is for a 2005......"VSS is a green/white @ the PCM above the battery, reverse is light green or gray in the driver's kick panel in the harness leading to the back of the car.")

I also got this....this is for a 2004 cpe with auto....

"Reverse Light dk. blue - BCM, pink 32 pin plug, pin C1
Notes: The BCM is in the passenger side footwell, under the carpet.

I found it easiest to reach the VSS at the Power Control Module: Speed Sense dk. green/white cluster or PCM, red plug, pin 50. Everything is really crowded in the passenger footwell and there is no slack in the wiring.

Here is what worked for me. Jack up the car and remove the cover panel behind the passenger side wheel. The wire you want on the PCM is nearest the outside of the car. You may need a magnifing glass to read the pin numbers. The hardest part of the operation is getting the stupid plastic covers off the PCM. Remove the battery, and the black plastic tape off the wire bundle that runs through the firewall. A stiff piece of wire will go through into the inside fuse box area so you can fish the AVIC VSS wire through.

I did not hook up the reverse wire as I'll never add a camera.

It was real easy to run the antenna wire under the carpet to the back of the car and run it outside through the cabin vent just behind the left rear wheel. I ran a reverse wire there to have available in the future if I want to hook it to a backup light. The antenna sits on the metal frame rail, accessed by removing the taillight and gets real strong signals through body.

What else? Oh, yeah, I lost some FM reception because the antenna module is not working and probably because I hooked the Pioneer antenna to the Vette cable at the radio. I think it will be better to hook the pioneer antenna cable to the module just behind the driver door and have a shorter run.

Thats the wire im gonna go after, the pcm one. Thanks for the tip on how to get at it.

I also ran the antenna through to the inside of back bumper, with the reverse wire, and sat radio antenna.

I searched and searched and it turns out there is no VSS wire in the bundle already, seems retarded to me, why wouldnt there be, Some sort of sensor eh?

Hey, Teapot, you might save some time and trouble by checking with Pioneer to see if the N1 has had the flex cable replaced. This is such a design defect that Pioneer will replace it once for free. I bought a two year old N2 from a Forum member and within a few weeks the cable failed and the screen went black. The catch: the cable repair is free, but if the HU has the solder bypass they replace the board and charge you $200. Pioneer must have had some hellacious lawsuits the way they try to lock these things while moving. I'm trying a private repair firm that will fix the screen for $120 and not mess with the bypass.

I just saw this thread and I am needing the speed control wire and reverse wire location for a JVC KD-NX5000 Nav unit that is being installed in my 97 coupe. I have been flipping the manual apart and have not been able to find the location of the speed wire. Does anyone know the colors and location
of these wires on a 97 C5 Coupe. Any help would be appreciated very much as I am needing this for tomorrow morning. The unit say it is calibrating and just stays there. The JVC troubleshooting part of the manual says that unless the speed control wire is attached the Nav part will not operate. Thanks so much to anyone with info on this

 

 

The following was information that forum member "Clayton1" sent me and it was right on. The audio installer just use the following info to find the speed control wire and the reverse wire in my 97 C5 Coupe. I would post the photos he sent but I don't know how.

Ok, This is what I did, But I also heard you could go through the instrument cluster as well for the speed wire. ( I had the cluster out a couple weeks ago and dont want to do it again.)
So I went with the PCM. Its really very easy,( I finally got my Pioneer avic z2 going the other night, but my reverse lights are still messed up.. cause i shorted them out )

I will explain first then list the pics.

Anyway, You’ll need to jack up the front end or passenger side, whichever and remove the pass. tire.
Then remove the cover (T-15 screw driver) There is I believe 3 also on the bottom.
Now the covers off, Take a look up and see the PCM, it will have 2 long connectors which are held in by a screw. One is blue and one is red, I didn't see which was which until i took them out. But the closest to the edge of the car is the red one, the one you want.
So unplug that one, and grab a flashlight and if you look where the wires enter the plug they are numbered. The wire is green with a white stripe, but there is 3 of them very close to each other so make sure you get the right one.
So, PCM , Red plug, Pin 50- which is green with white stripe.
Oh, I also removed the battery first, and after ran the wire up and into the big rubber grommet on the firewall, I black taped a piece of coat hanger to the wire and put a little bit of die-electric grease and slid right through.
