Quick question?
After seeing what many have accomplish with their audio set-ups on this forum I'm a little embarrassed asking a stock head unit question. There is a small "lens" to the upper right of the ON/OFF/Volume **** just below the VOL callout, what, if anything, does this do?

I believe you are describing the LED that would blink red when the car is off and the key pulled from the ignition. It only works if you have input the lock code. It is intended to be a theft deterent.
