I've just about finished ordering my stereo upgrades. Here is where I am so far. Car is a vert so I plan on leaving the stock head unit for now. If I am not happy I will go MacIntosh.
Memphis 500.1 sub amp
memphis M3 sub 12"
Memphis 50x4 or 100x2 amp
Memphis 6 3/4" components (planned for doors)
Memphis 5 1/2" components (planned for rear fill)
Stinger cables etc.
PAC bose adapter (RCA outs)
I have a chance to buy a pair of Dynaudio 360 3 ways for the doors. I love their home stuff but have never heard their car stuff. Would the 360 Dynaudio's be a big step up over the Memphis 6 3/4"?? These are the 8" 3 ways with a 9" upgrade to the woofers.
Im on the fence. As well as the increased price for the speakers I would also need to run the amp as a 2 channel and put a third amp in for the rears. Not to mention the fact that I already bought the other speakers etc. I'll go for it if there is a big improvement.
not ever hearing the memphis speakers, the dynaudio speakers are my absolute favorite sounding speakers. They aren't to bright and they are nice and 'warm'. With the 8" woofers and proper deadening you can also cross over to your woofer lower to add more 'upfront' bass and reduce the chances of being able to localize your sub. I say if you have the money go for the dyn's. if you're completely happy with the memphis's though, save your money.
I would also suggest deleting the rear speakers all together and just running fronts and a sub. it'll improve your soundstage and save you space and money.
They are truelly fantastic speakers, I was running them for a while in my c5. but they need a REALLY good and powerful amp to run them, something like a Genesis, Brax, Sinfoni, McIntosh. They require a lot of really clean power.
Dyns need a lot of juice. At 150, my midbass was ok. 300 watts woke that set up. Also, the tweeters, they have poor top end, and I think they are not so good at high volumes. Nice detail, and great speakers for low to moderate listening levels. The midrange in the dyn 3 way set is incredible.
I recently replaced my Dyn tweets with Seas Neo tweeters. (I keep switching between aluminum and silk seas) Both silk and aluminum options are smoother than the dyns, with better off axis, and SIGNIFICANTLY better high volume performance. The silks are somewhat more detailed, the aluminums blow the dynaudio tweeter out of the water. Cost? $60 a pair from madisound. Only concern is long term power handling.
I'm going to hold off on the Dynaudio's. I am going to install the Memphis speakers and see how they are in this car (have them in my truck). If I am not happy I will grab the Dynaudio's. I was also told to get a bigger amp and ARC Audio was recommended. Another company I don't know a whole lot about.
I did a bunch of research and decided i wanted to test out the seas drivers. I didn't want to go 3 way (i want to go fully active and didn't want to have to find the room for another amp) so I went on a search for a better setup. I decided to go with the large format tweeter so it could play lower and that opened up my choice of woofers. when i read the review from npdang I was sold. Now i just have to wait to test them out. It's looking like it'll be about 3 weeks. Just talked with the installers today to flesh out the design
