how much power are you sending to your speakers? Have you considered 16ga? 14ga is rather difficult to find. I got a couple rolls of monster cable 16ga from walmart and it works excellent especially for $20/roll.
if i recall correctly 16awg will support 120W of power.
If you were sold 18g with a thick jacket, I hope they accepted your return of the product.
I don't know where you are from but you can get good 14g from a pro audio dealer from West Penn for half that price. It's not pretty with a plain jane gray pvc jacket. It is made for installs. Try a pro music store that will make special orders for you.
Remember that 14g is more than twice the copper as 18g. It's not cheap in any case. I used to buy 16g 4 conductor in large quantities for versatility. 4 conductor for carrying stereo or doubled up for 13g equivalent.
Ask if they sell West Penn or Belden spkr wire. Get it in at least a 500ft. roll and it should be very reasonable. Sell the rest to forum members. They might be very reasonable for small quantities too.
Check out PE bro .. I bought a spool of their pro audio 14g stuff (which is larger than any wire I have used for my installs heh) for like $15 for 50'. It was on closeout but it is nice wire and definitely not overjacketed 18 gauge.
