I am looking in to buying a stealth box but am a little hesitant. Once installed and i put the compartment cover back over the rear compartment, when listening to the system does it rattle? I cant handle rattling and feel like its only worth it to get that box if I am positive that wont be the case.
They are on the spendy side and are loaded with one of their lower line drivers. The cover is integrated and perforated which is nice however.
You can make a stealthbox of your own, and a cover for it (vented is highly recommended to move air away from the cone). Dave at corvettecaraudio.com builds some nice enclosures as does NVTHIS on the forums here. Worth checking out and I am pretty sure both will be less expensive than the JL option.
I bought a stealthbox from NVTHIS and I made a cover myself out of a soft carpet material from Lowes. I put a cover on the sub to protect it, and never had to worry about hindering the sound by putting the cover back on. The whole setup cost less than half of what a JLAudio box would cost you...
i was thinking more covered up...isnt it possible to have the sub and box underneath the stock cover? this way it looks at if there is no sub at all when looking into the trunk.....

It is possible. That is the 'intent' of the stealthboxes, but you might have issues depending on the sub you use. Some speakers have thicker surrounds and cause clearance issues with the cover. You might have to remove the carpet under where the subbox goes (actually, if you look at JL's instructions, they say you have to cut out the carpet for the box to fit right). I did not want to do any carpet cutting on mine.
Bigger thing to me was your sub needs to move air to make sound. How much air is it going to move when it is basically pressed right against your cover? How long before the forces on the cover from the speaker start causing issues with the cover latches and how well they hold?

yea i understand what your saying...prob wouldnt be long until the latches etc start to have problems... Just figure in a "perfect" world it would work...haha oh well, back to the thinking...just not sure i want a sub popping out of the floor like so many people tend to have...although its still flush, just not sure I would want it in the center rear of the trunk... maybe a bazooka tube against the back wall? although i am not sure of their quality, have yet to listen to them. anyone know?
If you want real bass, bazooka tubes are not an answer ... and by real bass I mean more than just a little boom.
You can certainly purchase or build yourself a cover (I used 18 gauge aluminum) and carpet it, cut a hole in the middle of it and install a flush grill or buy some grill like material to vent air into the car and away from the cone, and still not have a protruding cone that sticks out. The factory cover is nice, I have one .. but you are doing either your pocketbook or your time a disservice if you do not vent the sub. I would say a completely unvented sub will loose 40% of its output in our cars. Possibly more .. I guess I could do a comparo myself to answer the question for sure.
Talk to the people I mentioned .. there are also center compartment enclosure plans available in the faq I believe for the c5 if you want to tackle the project yourself .. and worse case scenario you can always use the factory cover when you are truly trying to be "stealth".

Fej thank you for the info.
Most likely I'll build my own box. Luckly we don't put anything in the back of the Vette's. Only when we head to Vette functions. I may just put a grill over the Sub to protect it.
