In my 89 i have noticed a high pitched feedback sound. It comes from all four speakers. I was thinking it was time to replace the radio unit. What do you guys think?

i just got the car a few days ago(like 10 days). i usally have the convetable top down so you cant hear it. I assume it was allways there?? I did have a new alarm put in but i when back, they diconnected everthing and it was still there. that is the only thing that is not orginal on the car... eccept for an air foil.
Generally alternator whine (if the whine increases/decreases with engine RMP) is the result of a bad ground. Radio shack/Best Buy/Circuit City/any stereo shop can sell you a filter that should eliminate alternator whine. My only concern is - with a factory head unit/factory wiring you shouldn't be experiencing alternator whine. This usually occurs with aftermarket head units with an insufficient ground. If you feel inclined check your radio ground. If all is good get a filter from one of the suppliers mentioned above. If you're looking for an excuse to buy a CD player you've found one. If you want to keep it 100# stock I can check out the wiring diagrams and give you some grounds to check.
If the pitch of the squeel moves in step with the rpm, I would first clean the battery connections. Remove the battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, battery posts, and bolts and replace (neg last). If you still have the squeel, you most likely have electrolytic capacitors in the amplifiers (each speaker has its own amplifier) that have reached the end of their life and needs to be replaced. The squeel caused by defective capacitors does not change pitch with engine rpm.
I would also like to know where the ground(s) is for the radio. I get tremendous static only on am stations...fm's are fine. Thanks Vtvette for any help.
When my speaker amp went out on my Bose system I had this horrendous squeal and popping noises. At first it came and went but it wasn't long before it was on all the time. Replaced the offending amp and all is good again.

I think I have two going out on the 90 I just bough. No sound from Passenger Front or Driver Rear (When I get sound). May try the e*** vendor that fixes all amps for $200.
