I just finished the new stereo, ipod, backup camera, and heads up display install. I had the bezel modified to keep the same factory design. You will see the lower door remains and I had the bezel molded to hold the Ipod. Everything works great and the Avic Z1 works great.
I took the car to a custom stereo installation shop in the St. Louis area. They use high density foam to custom mold car parts i.e. dash, door panel, stereo bezels etc. The original design for the ipod storage area was to have rollers to slide the ipod in. The ipod would lock in and you would then have to push on the ipod and it would roll out. There was not enough room to make this work so I settled for the manual method. By using this process, the crossbars could be reduced to fit the double din and still leaves the door. The foam is very strong which allowed for the crossbar to be reduced in size. The door was cut down on the top to allow for some additional room as well.
The crossbars, ipod storage area and the material around the stereo was all poured with foam and carved into shape. The head unit was wrapped in a heat resistant plastic and the foam was poured around the head unit to get a very tight fit. Removal of some foam was required to allow the face to open.
The shop needs the car to make sure the head unit and bezel has a good fit.
You can do this same process with the abs, fiberglass material found in other threads. What is different here from the other installs is leaving a functional door and the ipod storage.
I give it a thumbs up!! Everything works very well except for the steering wheel remote. It needs to be located on the side of the wheel closest to the head unit. Sometimes the head unit does not respond to the remote.
I have the z1 in my truck with the ipod interface and on the 80 gig ipod, you need to have all of your music in playlists because it is very slow to browse thru it.

Thanks for the heads-up. That confirms what I've heard about the Z1/Z2. Some people have told me the D3 interface w/ the iPod is faster, but I haven't confirmed it yet. I'll be ordering one of these units in the next few weeks and I am looking forward to putting in such a great system. (still waiting for a bypass hack for the Z2)
