Default HU Choices

Hello,

I was wondering is anyone can provide feedback on my replacement head unit choices.

My requirements are:
Double DIN (don't like the gap with single DIN units)
- Question - do i need to mod the dash/bezel to fit a double DIN unit?
Full iPod Control
Pre-amp outs including sub

On the cheap end, I found this Kenwood 701. It's not on the Kenwood website any longer which is a little strange. Lower models are still there.
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...DPX-701+-.html
It has a sensor that is supposed to display car info. I wonder if that is accurate. Anyone have this?

Something like this would be ideal but its a bit out of my price range: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...Q-VD6505U.html
I don't care about navigation, and I have a panasonic already and it's very reliable.

About the only single DIN unit I would consider is this: http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=iDA-X001. Anyone have thoughts on this? Again, I don't like the space around the single DINs but if the price was right, I would do it. Also, this does not have a CD player, not a big deal, but still would be nice to have.

Kenwood 7019 here. It has very nice iPod support. This was one of my key requirements as well. This also does video, which you didn't specify if you wanted or not. I think most full double DIN units have at least minimal video.

Actually, I have an 80gb iPod video so that is a pretty sweet option. I'll have to check in to that. It looks like the Kenwood 7019 is about $680. Do you have the nav on it as well? It's all way more than I wanted to spend but these mods tend to get out of control if you want all the toys (which I do, especially after reading up on all my options).

What did you do with the bose speakers? Ideally, I am thinking I would like to keep all 4 and simply cap them somehow. I've got a nice Alpine 600w 6 channel amp (nice clean power) that I would like to run everything, but I'll have to see how that goes. I'd like to try to avoid speaker replacements if at all possible.

I do have the nav unit and it works very well. Not quite as fancy visually as some, but works very well.

I took all the speakers out and replaced them with higher power components in the door and subs in the back (vert). I would recommend this setup. I'm holding on the Bose stuff in case I want to re-install it for resale. If I were doing it in pieces, then I would just do the HU first and then wait on the amp and speakers. I would replace them as a set. I'm not sure what you meet by capping them.

Since you have a C5, then yes you will have to mod your bezel to fit a DD unit. Ive been strugleing with the same issue, I dont like to space around the single din. there are a few options such as the HUmount kit, also someone on here that makes a nice kit for it, I think his is alum. It actually looks pretty good from the pictures. Let me know if your intrested in going that route and Ill send you the info I have.

A buddy of mine installed capicitors in line with the speakers. They filtered the bass frequency out to the speaker, so all I got from them was mids and highs. Worked like a charm and the capicitors were only a few cents each.

I saw those spacers for the single din units on corvettecaraudio.com. Not a bad option. I definitely do not want to mode my bezel. I thought the double din would fit without modding it...that kinda sucks.

I might go 1.5 din - I know Pioneer makes some in that size. I'll have to research those a bit more to see if they come with what i am looking for. If not, I may settle on the Alpine unit above.

I have a Pioneer DEH-P77DEH in my car now with a Sirius tuner attached. I'm very happy with it. I'm just running it to the BOSE system now.

I'm taking it out to install a Kenwood 7100 and taking out the BOSE speakers and adding a sub at the same time.

So I guess you are going to have to mod your dash. How did the DEH-P77 look in there? Any pics?

It seems to be one of the only 1.5 DIN units available. It doesn't do full iPod control (even with their adapter) so it doesn't meet my requirements, but I'm curious to know about the fit.

I may end up doing this in phases...
Phase 1 - AMP + sub for extra bass
Phase 2 - HU + speakers

I'm just not at the point where I want to start cutting the dash. If I find someone selling one, then I may attempt it and keep mine to go back to stock. Otherwise, I think it's a little much.

FinishLine,
I looked at the pioneer HU, it didnt impress me too much. Mostly I think because of the lack of MP3 and the look of it. If they made it in a black color that would be better, but its grey and IMHO looks way out of place in a vette with black interior. Look into some of the newer JVC models. The NX5000, and AVX33 to be specific. They both have Ipod control (I think you have to buy an adapter seperate though), DVD video, sat radio, mp3, etc etc. The NX5000 is HDD navigation with I believe 24gb of storage for music. The AVX33 doesnt have the nav but has a USB port in the back so you can hook up a portable hard drive to it. They are both also bluetooth capable.

You are right, those JVCs do look pretty slick, especially the 3.5 lcd models. Damn, decisions decisions.
