Default How many have them? Pics?

I have been toying with the idea for my C5 and finally found someone that did it and liked it.

I thought about matching up 8's in my doors with a tweet or adding components and making it a 3 way system in my C5 convertible.

Has anyone tried these options? What do you think? I have a really nice set of Polk 8's not being used that I would love to match with something.

If you have any pics and opinions please let me know!

Thanks...

Here are mine:

You have to use 1/4" mdf for the drivers door or else it will hit the A/C vent. The mid is blocked by the door panel a bit, but I've listened to it with and without the panel, and there isn't much loss. Dynamat helps alot! I'm sure if the factory system had more power and some dynamat, we wouldn't be ripping it out. I'm thinking of a 10" shallow mount now.

to keep it simple i'd stick with a large format tweeter and the 8" in a two way design. I'm doing a 7"/large tweet config currently and everything fits nicely.

where do you recommend mounting the tweets? Stay in the door, in the door pulls, or on the pillar?

For a 3 way IMO the A pillars are the best location, as kicks are too far forward and have too many reflection issues in the c5, and the door pulls are adequate, but do not image well and are easily blocked, especially when driving with your left arm up.

I am with scott about a large format tweet and a 7" midbass/range 2 way behind the factory grill being the best option (aimed as best you can) as it is the least intrusive in the interior, requires less amplification and processing, and will certainly make you realize how bad the blose really is.

I myself have a 3 way in the vette, and once I motivate this winter to glass some pods into my extra set of A pillar covers I will throw my tweets up top and see how it goes. When I was just playing around with this idea it certainly cleaned the stage up a ton and was cleaner with less reflection issues.

That being said, since the vette is mainly a weekend toy/racecar now .. I will likely be losing my tweet amp mounted on the back wall and doing a nice 2 way behind the factory grill myself.

For pics check out "what do you run" stickied at the top of the forum.

I am still not quite sure...

Would I rather lean towards a 3 way because I have these fantastic polk 8's already and I have a Diamond Audio D6 that can drive the hell out of anything so wattage is not an issue.? I thought maybe going with the Diamond D6 5" components maybe with the 5 and 8 in the door and the tweet on the pillar.

Is this crazy? I have an eclipse 12" that will be in the rear center compartment. With the 12 in the rear is the 3 way just too much overkill on the low end?

Since I have the 12" in the rear, is it just better to go with the 8" in the door and use my Audiocontrol active crossover to make it a driver and just add a nice tweeter to the pillar?

Let me know what you think?

Again, thank you guys for all the help...

An 8" and a 5" has no chance of fitting behind the factory grill. You would end up having at least 50% of the 5" blocked behind the door panel introducing a bunch of reflection issues. If you really wanted those you would need a custom build out. If you really want those 8's I would look at a 3" dome midrange or 4" cone MAX to pair with it. And probably be willing to do some door skin trimming and custom mounts to make it all fit. I have a 7" and 3" dome mid (really 4") and I had to stack them a little bit (frame over frame) to get it to fit in the factory space and I still have about 20% of the mid blocked.

My reasoning for a three way setup:
I had Boston Acoustics two way components installed before. I just wanted to see what a 3-way would sound like, so I added a 4" midrange to the two way setup. I like how much clearer the type of music (which is everything) that I listen to sounded. So I decided that having dedicated speakers reproducing certain frequencies sounded better to me than having one speaker reproduce the same range of frequencies. I only went with the 8" because I had them and needed to rebuild the speaker adapter anyway. My midrange is partially covered by the panel, but taking "Kale's" advise, I listened to it with and without the door panel, and the difference was not noticeable.
Before I changed from 6.5 to 8", I did add dynamat to doors, this helped alot. No matter what you do now, you'll always end up wanting something more down the road.... this is the life of a modder...

A bit of caution if you decide to just use the polk 8's and a tweet. Are the 8's considered bass drivers or mids. Using a 8" sub clear up to say 2kH would sound rather bad. The weight of the cone and strength of the spider wouldn't be well suited for mid-range freqencies. Look up the specs for your particular driver to see.

thats a great point, i totally assumed that they were a mid w/o looking at the specs. I guess that should be your first stop over at google... find the freq response of those drivers

yep! good call guys...didn't think about that one. They are in a sub box that I will open up and post the range if you don't mind letting me know if it is acceptable or whether I just need to sell them.

Thanks again...

If they are not designed for "free-air"/IB(infinite-baffle applications, then I don't think they will work well in the doors. You'll probably end up just tearing up the cones.
