It wasn't always the case, when xm only had 110 channels the sq was cd quality. They used to advertize cd quality, then "digital quality" after they added traffic and a lot of other crap, eating up all their bandwidth. Go to xm411.com, there's bitch threads as long as your arm on the subject. I hope the merger fails and they go broke, maybe then someone will buy the sats and restore the sq with music and ona only.
The sad thing is that, on 8-5, XM and Neural did an upgrade that made things sound better. Unfortunately better crap is still crap. I'm sticking with my Ipod.
The only way to do it is to dump some of the extra garbage and free up bandwidth. If xm and sirius merge it'd be great if they used the xm platform for mostly music,100 channels at a much higher bit rate, then use the sirius platform for music (low bit rate) sports and talk. But this won't happen because both companies are managed by total idiots. They had a chance to really make something of sat radio and blew it. They should have never gave up sq for a bunch of crap content trying to be everything to everyone.

An "XM Audiophile" service would be nice. Just the genre channels, maybe less of them, however few it takes to get CD quality, or at least, 256kb mp3 quality.
I think I read somewhere that the satellite stations were transmitting 64k bit streams. For those who can't tell or don't know the difference, you would know it if you heard it side by side. Just like the iPod offers tremendous convenience, we sacrificed some quality and the masses have spoken and accepted MP3's as acceptable. XM and Sirius offers tremendous variety and apparently people are accepting even less quality for it. The beauty of the iPod is that you can at least choose the bit rate you want or full CD quality.
64kb would be great! try 33kb to 44kb for the majority of the channels. the classic music channel is 64kb if I remember correctly, and a couple more (like 2). ona are a higher bitstream also. I listened to the boneyard and the 80's today while gassing up the wifes car, it sounded worse than ever. So much for the fix earlier this month. There's a thread on xm411.com that lists the bitrate for the channels.

No wonder I never liked it. I haven't listened to it in a long time other than background music from friends. I'm getting a new Caddy SUV next week. It'll come with the Sat. radio for a few months. I'll pay attention again. I'm afraid I'll be very disappointed.
Although the sound quality is not great with any station, I've found that the Loft #50 has much better quality than Top Tracks #46. Deep Tracks is just awful.
