Default Questions

I have a Kenwood KVT-819DVD and a Alpine PDX 1.600 on a JL 10W6v2 in a sealed stealth enclosure.
What does the "loudness" button on my Kenwood headunit do? Obviously it makes things loud, but what does it actually do to the signal?
My stereo sounds much better at low volume with the loudness on.
Also I read on this forum that having gains on amps turned all the way up is bad, why?

Loudness (as well as Alpine's BBE) is an EQ curve that increases bass and treble at low volumes, but the amount of boost gradually diminishes as the volume is turned up. Where and how the boost is done is different from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Running amps at high gain is NOT inherently a bad thing unless your system has a noise issue. Lowering the amplifier gain control allows a higher voltage signal from the upstream components, allowing for potentially more noise-free signal once it gets to the amp. If you have a suitable noise floor, the amplifier gain is actually irrelevant.

Loudness Compensation is the complete term. The human ear doesn't hear bass and treble at low volumes as easily as it does at high volume. It is intended to make it sound better at low volumes, just as you described. Some of the cheaper units do not decrease the boost at higher outputs, they just expect you to turn it on when low and off when high.

Spkrboy covered the other point very well.
