First of all I'm not an audiophile. I have a buzzing in front right speaker. I've been told that it is probably the amp going bad. I called one place and they want $190 to repair. This seems extreme but ZIP wants $120 for a replacement amp. I was told I cannot replace the speaker because of incompatibility of a modern speaker with this system. I'm looking for advice. I just want a working system. If I were to replace the whole system what kind of $ am I looking at?
You can just replace the bad Bose amp/speaker but, EVENTUALLY the other Bose amp/speakers will go out and at $120 a unit it will get very expensive.
Or, you can buy an Alpine head unit that Plays MP3's for $140, 4 channel amp $200, two way Component speakers $180, subwoofer and box for $100 and an amp wire kit for $50.
So, for under $700 ($1200 installed by an audio shop) you could have a great sounding system vs. $480 for four rebuilt Bose amp/speaker units and another $250 to rebuild the Bose head unit when it eventually dies.
It just depends how long you want to keep your Vette. If you're planning on keeping it for a long time, I would replace the entire audio system since it'll be cheaper in the long run but, if you're thinking of selling it in a few years I would just fix the one bad amp/speaker.
