Default C5 Radio Light problem - Please Help

Well after doing the radio LED lamp replacement it looked great. Unfortnately it only lasted about 20 min. and all the radio LED's went out. They didn't burn out they just didn't light anymore.
I took the radio in to get it checked out and the radio dude told me the LED's didn't draw enogh amps and the radio in the Vette has a data connection that feeds info to the computer and the draw is necessary or the car's electrical can do wierd things.
Don't know if this is the case but he changed the LED's back to the lamps so I will keep everyone posted when I get it installed. I did do the LED's in the Climate Control and it still looks great but it is not part of the data feed loop apparently. Anyone ever heard of this?

Default More......

Ok folks I really need some help on this one as I haven’t been able to drive the car for ever and it’s driving me crazy. First let me say that I love my car. I sold my Chevelle that took me 5 years to restore and I thought that I would never ever part with it. Well a grocery bag full of 100’s, and I do mean a grocery bag full, caused me to change my mind. As well as all the life changes I have gone through in the last couple of years, divorce, losing 230 lbs, custody of my kids, 3 y/o awesome house etc… seemed to tell me it was time to change gears to something I would enjoy. I really didn’t even thing about a Corvette. I guess I had my mind made up that they were out of my price range. My best friend suggested I drive one and said there was a newer convertible up the road for sale. WOW, I now own it. But I digress…..

As I stated earlier I am having issues with my OEM cassette AM/FM radio.

Here is the background again: My Climate Control had a fading display when I got the car. I read on the forum that it was cracked solder joints and since I collect 80’s arcades and pinball’s I have done quite a bit of soldering and building of boards etc… I ordered a new key bezel from Gene, great guy, and when it arrived I removed the trim for the key, radio and climate control. Removed the climate control and following the instructions removed and re-soldered for the display. It worked GREAT! When I reinstalled the unit I notice most all of the little 12v lights were out. The filaments were broken. I suspect this is due to the tight suspension. Anyway I read about upgrading to LED’s and I made an order w/ Oznium. I paid way too much for a few LED’s and resisters. I replaced the lamps and the unit looked fantastic. But now it overshadowed the radio. I took the radio out and even though it was described as being difficult, I found that outing LED’s in it was easier. Maybe just because I had done the climate Control and knew what to do. Anyway it looked unbelievable….. for about 20 minutes and the lights went out. I was driving and they just went out. The radio still worked great and the display was fine but no lamps. I removed it and looked for shorts etc… in my work w/o luck. I tried it a few more times w/o any luck.

I took the radio to our local repair guy and asked him to give me a quote on what was wrong. Long story short he replaced all my LED’s with 12v lamps w/o my knowing. $55 later he told me that this was a special radio set-up and that it had a data link back to the computer on the Vette and without the correct draw of the 12v lights things would not work correctly. I went home and later that night I plug the radio in. As soon as I hooked up the power it made a BOOM in the base speakers (stock) and the antenna went up. No display, no radio and NO LIGHTS. I tried everything and to say that I was pissed was a understatement.

Can anyone shed and LIGHT on this issue? Is this radio SO SPECIAL that I messed something up with the LED’s? Did I mess up the computer? Now I have the “reduce engine power”, “traction control failure” errors.

Help lease. Any suggestions at all. I am super bummed and I can’t even drive the car like this and snow is around the corner.

Do I have to take it to the STEALER and have them hook it up for a diagnostic? UG!!!!!

MORE: I went by the Dealer and they said they need to reprogram the computer?????

ok first off others have replaced them with no problems before, ive never done it, but im assuming the way you did it should have worked.

Now as far as it not working now, im assuming they shorted something out while putting bulbs back in and the radio may very well be fryed now.
