My Bose radio in the 87 needs to be replaced. It wont play the tape , It just spits it out and the radio doesn't work .. What is a good replacement & CD player ?? I am looking for something where I can just plug in the wire conn.
Thanks
Hans
I have an 86 and the tape player did the same thing. I replaced it with a Pioneer. They made one that fits the whole perfect. I had to use an adapter to just the Bose speakers. I know most will say replace the Bose speakers, but mine were in good shape.
I bought the radio/CD player through Car Domain for about $180. I think the model is 4700.
I did go to the audio section and it was very helpfull.
The nearest store to us is about 100 miles away, so
I'm going to try to search on-line. As it's getting
close to snow..and the 87' goes into storage, this may
be a good inside winter job.
Thanks again,
Hans
It sounds like you've been successful replacing the head unit while retaining the Bose speakers. I'm having trouble doing that very thing.
I'm using the Peripheral Electronics SVEN4 with their SVHGM1 wiring adapter.
My question is about the wires that need to be hooked up. I've got the harness wired to the adpater nd I think I've got it right. However, there are other wires that were connected to the back of the stock bose radio that I am not sure what to do with.
I'm not sure how to insert pictures so I'll try to describe the wires I am not sure what to do with.
There is one gray/white, one pink and a connector with an orange and a brown wire attached. These connected to the back of the stock radio separately from the three connectors aligned together on the bottom right of the back of the radio.
I wired the radio into the three (blue, white & black) connectors but those other wires are not connected to anything.
When I turn on the radio, it appears to function but there is no sound. Could I have some other wires to connect to support the speak amps?
I just had mine replace yesterday with Pioneer radio, blue tooth, and able to connect my IPOD, and work it with the head unit for display and operation. Love it!

It has been awhile since I installed my radio. As I recall, my adapter was strictly for the speakers. The adapter even had level adjusters built into it. All power wires and antenna I believe still connect to the radio.
It,s been to long since I put it in, to be sure of anything.
I just received my Pioneer DEH-P77DH today with the wiring adapter and instructions ..I haven't had time to open the box yet but I will take a look at the wiring schematic and let you know .

I got it working today!! A couple of things I learned in the process...
The bose amps need power and the pink wire in the '87 vette is the one to feed them. I hooked up the power antenna 12v line from the radio and that got the speakers cranking. The orange wire is the "always on" 12v line which I used for the "memory" feature of the new radio. The gray wire appears to be for illumination for which the radio had no corresponding connection so that one went unused (taped it up to protect from short).
I made no alterations to the stock wires which will allow me to go back to original later if I choose.
Now that it's all working, I'm trying to figure when I would actually use a DVD player in my C4. I may never use it but it's fun to know it's there. (I have no idea what that means...)
I installed the radio the other day with no major problems except for the mouse nest behind the radio ... Cant get the right door speaker to work , I don't think it was working before I replaced the radio.. Removed the door panel and speaker . Is the speaker amplifier inside the speaker box and under the speaker , If it is how do you remove and test it without removing the window mechanism ??
thanks
I have a 1991 and problems with the radio. I had the radio tested and nothing is wrong with it. The symptoms are that when I first start the car it works fine, but moments later there is a loud pop from the speakers and the sound stops and replaced with a loud hum. What is going on with this radio. Does it have a secondary amp some where in the car? Or is one of the speaker amps causing this to happen? Please help me diagnose the problem. This is a show car and need to stay with same radio.
Thanks,
Windhorse

On the Bose radios in our cars, the amps for the speakers are located w/ the speakers. That means that the box the speaker sits in has an amp in there w/ it. Sounds like your amps are bad. You can remove them and send them out to be repaired, or just replace them w/ new, aftermarket stuff.
I replaced all of mine, and it sounds great. You need to read the C4 FAQ at the top of the section for all of the info you are looking for. If you still have questions after reading it, just let me/us know.
