I know you don't want to do this but thought I would post anyway -
This was housing a JL Audio 300/2 and 250/1; now housing a 450/4 and 300/2. I went this route because I did not want to give up much trunk space (already lost the well to my stealthbox) and had the latch issue you mention (2004 Z06 here). I also wanted to get a trunk storage unit but am glad I waited or I would have this same dilemma. My wife did get me a leather pouch for Christmas from MAM; This is the one that mounts behind the passenger seat for add'l storage...

That is nice. Do you have a light source for the box if so can you post some night pics?
An installer at Hi-Fi buys made this for me. Unfortunately, they closed the store about a month after my install so I am now on my own. I dont have any details but could probably take some measurements for you. I had two 6 in. neon lights installed at either side and there is a nice subtle glow at night. I had a relay go bad but as soon as I get it replaced I'll get some pics posted up. This is nothing more than a bottom piece of MDF with amps mounted to it and an L-shaped top with front and sides open, ventilated screen cover at top. I'm pretty happy with this set-up as it provides a relatively stealthy appearance - the new amps are huge but are not that noticeable when everything is buttoned up...
No but I'll get some in the next couple of days. After having this installed last February I decided it could be a little better (I'm major OCD). I have recently changed the HU from an Eclipse CD5000 to a CD7100 and now the amps and added JL rear speakers for rear fill so it is a bit of a different system then it was
what do you think of your xr rears? I just bought a set of the xr525cxi and xr650csi. I plan to drive these with an alpine pdx 4.100 and use another alpine pdx 250 for a stealthbox
Awesome. Major PITA to install (I had to make spacer rings for clearance) but the additional fill was sorely missed and the SQ of the ZR's in front and XR's in rear is as good as I could hope for...
There is a plastic panel on the driver side that covers the gas tank fill tube. It is a bit shallower on this side and I ended up interfering with the speaker magnet by about 1/8". There is plenty of room between the plastic interior panel that houses the speaker grill but not in the actual mounting hole itself...

Look forward to seeing the pics. Thanks for the effort
I had a similar idea, but used a partition for a template to make the back of a tray that would act as the amp box. I made a false bottom to mount the amps at an angle and make a place to mount the wires and crossovers.
Then I vinyled it in OEM and added a Z06 fender emblem...
Had the amps chromed...
I had intentions to add some neon tubes, but changed my mind. I want something subtle and the rest of the install is stealth. And ultimately I thought the chrome was enough.
It leaves enough room in front of it to act as a Vette Tray. You can see this in the first pic.
If you're going to mount them on the back wall, there Should be plenty of room on either side of the trunk latch. There's not enough clearence to mount directly under the trunk latch itself.
The good news is that mounting on the rear wall is one of the most stable locations to mount to.
Here's the method I suggest: Place some painter's tape on the rear wall where the mounting holes will be. Place the amp on a small wood block (to allow for wiring clearences of the RCA cables) and use a sharpie to mark where the holes need to be drilled. Drill directly through the carpet and back panel.
Place a towel on the floor of the trunk and ley the amps face down. Connect all the wires for your amps and test them. Now's a good time to play with the settings/adjustments. Once you're satisfied, Remove the taillights to gain access to the rear panel. Use bolts with washers and locking nuts/spring washers through the panels to secure the amps to the rear wall.
This setup is far superior in strength to any anchorboard setup and you wont' have to worry about the screws vibrating loose. It also spares you the pain of having to tear apart your rear carpet to mount anchorboards.
