On a C5, you can replace it with an aftermarket without having to worry about any code.

Just swapped mine this week, no code necessary.

make sure you get the right radio harness adapter, we've tried several and the soundgate gmcrv2 was by far the best sound and quality while still using the factory bose equipment.
