My installer was running the cd in the AVIC that changes the firmware to allow DVDs to be played when the accessory power timed out and shut down power. The disk instructions warn that this could cause damage to the hard drive. After resetting the AVIC several times, the unit will still not recognizing data CDs and the software version still shows the original 2.0 version. Has anyone run into this? If so, what did you do? I've told the installer that if he can't fix the AVIC, he needs to replace it. Thanks.
If you find the system is really damaged due to the situation you can search the popular auction site for "AVIC Z2" and find choices of new hard drives from $99 to 180 that will have the most current maps and more space than stock. So at the worst you could end up with a better hard drive with most current software for easy bypass for some extra money. Who pays for it is up to you and the guy I suppose.
Thanks Minitech. A new hard drive from Pioneer is about $280. Question - if I buy an aftermarket HD as you suggest, is it plug-and-play? In other words do I just remove the old one and plug in the new one? Thanks.
Can I ask a stupid question?
Why the hell wasn't your car running while this was being done?
After reading that warning, I started my car up and left it running while I did the upgrade.
Don't let your installer off the hook for this one.
Evil, I did the upgrade in my F-150 and it went off without a hitch. If you follow the directions on the Pioneer site, you should have no problems.
It's worth it. Now the NAV works like it should.

Can you provide a link to the "directions on the Pioneer site?" Thanks.
Go to www.AVIC411.com
They have alot of info on that site.
There is a link for a freezing issue on the Z2's.
If you install this upgrade, it sets up the Z2 to be bypassed.
The site also has info on how to do the bypass.
I did mine in about 20 minutes.

I got confused when you said "Pioneer site." I've looked at AVIC411. Thanks.

if my z1 is bypassed via the wireing harness, will the upgrade mess that up?
If it were me I would buy the one on "The popular auction site" with 40 gig capacity for about $120.00 Yes it is plug and play. Don't even need to remove the head unit, the hard drive comes out the front just beneath the disc slot.
