What format for a '96 CD changer?

What format for a '96 CD changer?
First....I'm not replacing this Kenwood 10 disc changer anytime soon. So what format works for burned cd's in that thing? It works from time to time in MP3 but not even 30%.
Anyone overcome that problem (outside of a newer player?).
That Kenwood is excellent to this day except for burned cds.

I'll also add that it will play the first few seconds of most songs but then quits and then turn right around and play another song completely.
Could it have something to due with different compressions, bit rates or even the amount of spacing between the tracks?
I've been using Nero too.
