haha... yeah seeing how tubes are old school. It's still surprising to me for some reason. I guess i figured they only started making car stereo's when they had solid state electronics
does this sound better:
back then, i never realized they used tubes in head units
Tubes offer better sound quality than solid state electronics. Most High-end Amps use Vacuum tube rectifier circiuts.
There I have to disagree. One of my big pet peeves. There are certain stages or circuits of audio reproduction that can benefit from the use of tubes, but whatever tubes can do, solid state devices can do better, cheaper and more reliably. That doesn't mean I don't recognize that Phillips as an interesting collector's item. To quote a great article (scott_fx will remember where this is from):
As for the “tube sound,” there are two possibilities: (1) It’s a figment of the deluded audiophile’s imagination, or (2) it’s a deliberate coloration introduced by the manufacturer to appeal to corrupted tastes, in which case a solid-state design could easily mimic the sound if the designer were perverse enough to want it that way.

heh... i can't comment :-) i have hybrid tube amps at work and in my car. and my car amps are my favorite amps that i've ever owned. true, it's not a pure tube amp since the output stage is ss... so i'm a half believer? lol
i'll tell you this; for my headphone amps at work the hybrid does sound better then the full tube amp which i sold.
