Focal Alphabet Soup!!!
Examples of why my heads hurts.
165A1
165V1
165V2
165V2UV or 165V2S upgraded? Whats the upgrade?
165VR
I see the VRs recommended but not sure if that the latest and greatest in this class or ??
Phil
PS I will take 3 asprin and check in the morning
I assume V1s an older model to the V2 but still avail? The specs on the V2s upgraded are the same as the regular so I have no clue as to what was upgraded. I wonder if its better to bite the bullet and go to the K2P to get the TN52 tweet.
Anybody with some experience?
Much of the problem you have here is confusion from comparing models from one year to the next. Some of these aren't made anymore, and some have simply had names changed. In some cases, just the tweeter changed. Focal isn't consistent in their nomenclature either. In fact, I had to dig around a bit myself, andf I'm not sure I have these all straight either.
165A1 is the entry-level Access line 2-way. Small metal TNA tweeter. Basic crossover. Least expensive of the bunch.
165V1 is the Polyglass line version of the same system. Same TNA tweeter. Basic crossover.
165V2 is an older Polyglass model. Uses the TN47 tweeter (improvement over the metal TN45 or TNA). Basic crossover.Overall, a very high value for the $.
165V2UV is the same as the 165V2 with better crossovers. Better version of the 165V2.
165V2S is used interchangeably with the UV.
165VR is a newer, better driver set, still with a basic crossover. The tweeter, TNB, is a significant improvement over lower models (not to be confused with the TN52).
165VRS is a shallow-depth version of the 165VR. That doesn't mean they're otherwise the same.
The shallow-mounts are for people who want to say they have Focals without the requisite quality. Same for the Access line. They don't sound the same. Stay away. The 165V2 is most quality for your dollar. The 165VR is the best Polyglass set Focal makes.

The A's are the Access line, they're not the polyglass cones.
165V1
The 165 Polyglass mid with the Access tweeter and basic crossover.
165V2
The TN47 tweet with a better crossover.

The "S" is the slim-mount 165 midbass. Normally Focal's "upgrade" products are upgraded crossovers. Also looks like the VR's are only in the S series.
The TN52 is definitely a better tweet than the TN47, but the Kevlar is also a very different sound than the Polyglass. If you like the way the Kevlar sounds than it's certainly an option but I wouldn't select a set based strictly on one of the components, base it on how the set sounds to you.
Hope this helps.
Thanks to a couple of the heavy hitters to help and make me feel better about the confusion. Seems like it should be a lot easier to discern this stuff in the "information age"
I have basically been bouncing between the upgraded 165V2 (1652uv or 165V2S on some sites) and the 165VR. The both appear to be in the same price range and have some adjust ability on the crossovers but with different tweets. Unfortunately, I cant seem to find anyone local that has them, let alone an environment to hear them.
So, that being said I need to solicit opinions between the 2 with those who have had the luxury to work with both.
They will be placed in the C6 doors. The Stock Nav head unit will be the source with an amp and Sub (boxology down the road) and 5 1/4s coax (BA-S65)in the rear for fill.
Thanks again.

If price isn't a serious consideration, the VR set is the best of the bunch. The 165V2 tweeter was problematic to mount. If it wasn't done right, it did not sound good. The VR set has a far-superior tweeter that is much more forgiving of placement issues. Avoid the VRS.
