I'm looking for a single din HU right now, that i can listen to my 2gb thumb drive on. anyone know of any cool ones out that aren't terribly expensive?
I had to replace the HU in my 84. I didn't have a lot of disposable cash so I went to Walmart. They have (had) a VR3 HU that played cd, dvd, mp3, mp4 vids, wma, wmv. Any of the data formats could be played from an SD card or through the USB plug on the front for thumb drives and would also allow any of the media devices that use the windoze file system. It has a decent little screen on the front as well as video outs. It also does 5.1 surround. Not a bad unit for less than $200.
In something like my vette where the engine rumble is a bit loud, it works great.
theres others out there 2 those are just the 2 i recommend

I wouldn't mind spending 2-300 bucks on one. that kenwood looks nice. I had a kenwood DNX7100, so i've been pretty happy with the kenwoods. Had alpine in the past, i think the newer models are more foo foo than the 02-03 models. I miss those.
That's subjective... but if you think that $250 is a good price, look for an Alpine iDA-X001. I have one, and it works great with my thumb drive, iPod, and iPhone. (You might be able to find it for less now that the replacements are out.) Quick search on Amazon came up as $239.99.
I keep a 2 gig Thumb drive in my console and just plug it in when I forget my other devices. It has an "extension" cord that I ran to the ashtray area, but it's long enough to run to the console.
Features are pretty light on this unit... no CD, no crossover, no tunable EQ... just pre-set EQ or bass/treble control. Bluetooth capable, CD changer capable, HD radio capable, Aux in, and a few other features I don't use. Sound quality is excellent.
I highly recommend Kenwoods Excelon lineup. You can get a X591 for less then $150 and it is simply a badass unit. I do installs on the side and use these in all my boats and bikes. The features are great and the options for expanding are endless. If you want to bump it up go with the X792. I ordered it last week for around $200 and it is a very nice unit.
